Position Overview

Director - Government Banking in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates is a senior Banking opportunity focused on managing and growing Investment Banking relationships across government and public sector clients. The role is responsible for portfolio revenue growth, client relationship strategy, credit quality, deal origination, financial analysis, cross-selling, team supervision, and execution of complex banking opportunities while supporting First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB) in strengthening its public sector client coverage and long-term relationship returns.

Role Context

The Director - Government Banking will manage an assigned Investment Banking portfolio within the Government and Public Sector segment. This position combines client relationship leadership, revenue ownership, deal execution, credit discipline, team development, and strategic account planning. The role helps increase the bank’s share of target clients’ wallet, improves service quality, protects portfolio credit standards, and ensures that client opportunities are converted into profitable and compliant banking transactions.

Key Responsibilities

* Manage and grow an assigned portfolio of government and public sector clients within Investment Banking.
* Work with Managing Directors and senior leadership to develop team strategy, business plans, client priorities, and relationship return targets.
* Originate new business opportunities across Investment Banking products and wider FAB banking solutions.
* Build strong relationships with senior client stakeholders and maintain a clear understanding of client priorities, funding needs, market position, and strategic plans.
* Develop and execute term sheets, information memoranda, mandate letters, financial models, pitch materials, and deal-related documentation.
* Pitch, review, negotiate, and conclude transactions in collaboration with product teams, enablement units, risk teams, and internal stakeholders.
* Identify cross-selling opportunities and increase the cross-sell ratio with key clients across relevant banking products.
* Ensure account plans are prepared, updated, and maintained for all key client relationships.
* Participate in financial analysis of clients, industries, sectors, and market developments to identify opportunities and credit risks.
* Review financial statements, MIS, portfolio reports, budgets, and performance data to track progress against targets.
* Manage P and L responsibility for the assigned portfolio and achieve financial targets within approved budget levels.
* Maintain the credit quality of client relationships within acceptable levels set by bank management.
* Resolve credit, market, and operational risk aspects of transactions in coordination with product and enablement teams.
* Ensure credit reviews are submitted on time and agreed conditions are properly monitored and fulfilled.
* Maintain complete and accurate client files, relationship documents, credit records, and transaction documentation.
* Support satisfactory audit outcomes by ensuring portfolio activity follows internal controls, policies, procedures, and governance standards.
* Manage and follow up KYC, AML, compliance, and regulatory requirements for existing clients and new-to-bank relationships.
* Supervise day-to-day client interactions and activities of subordinate team members to ensure service quality and target delivery.
* Motivate, coach, and develop team members through on-the-job guidance, performance follow-up, and learning initiatives.
* Support talent development within the department and promote adherence to FAB values, ethics, and professional standards.
* Coordinate closely with product teams and internal stakeholders to maximize business opportunities and streamline deal execution.
* Assist the Sector Head with administrative, transactional, and portfolio-related activities to ensure continuity of work and high-quality outputs.
* Follow process KPIs, operational risk management requirements, business continuity procedures, internal audit standards, and approved banking policies.

Ideal Profile

* Bachelor’s degree in Finance or a related discipline.
* Master’s degree in Business Administration is preferred.
* Minimum 10 years of experience in Investment Banking.
* Strong knowledge of government and public sector banking, client coverage, relationship management, and portfolio revenue growth.
* Good understanding of the banking sector, FAB products, business strategies, credit processes, and transaction execution standards.
* Experience in originating, structuring, reviewing, negotiating, and closing complex client transactions.
* Strong financial modelling, data analysis, credit analysis, and financial statement review skills.
* Ability to prepare and assess term sheets, mandate letters, information memoranda, account plans, and client proposals.
* Proven ability to manage P and L responsibility, revenue targets, portfolio credit quality, and client satisfaction.
* Strong communication skills with the ability to engage senior stakeholders, product partners, risk teams, and client decision makers.
* Ability to work under pressure, adjust quickly to changing priorities, and manage multiple transactions at the same time.
* Computer proficiency and strong working knowledge of banking software systems.
* Strong leadership capability with experience coaching, motivating, and developing team members.
* High awareness of KYC, AML, operational risk, internal audit, compliance, and governance requirements in banking.
