Role Context
The Chemical Engineering Quality Assurance Lead will oversee the accuracy and consistency of technical material used to train and evaluate advanced artificial intelligence models. Assignments may include chemical process explanations, numerical calculations, equipment selection, plant operating scenarios, process safety assessments, and engineering problem-solving tasks.
The successful candidate will identify incorrect assumptions, calculation errors, unit inconsistencies, weak process reasoning, unsafe recommendations, and incomplete technical explanations. The role also includes coaching trainers and reviewers, maintaining project documentation, supporting onboarding, and developing scalable quality assurance practices for chemical engineering content.
Key Responsibilities
* Review chemical engineering AI training items against detailed project rubrics and technical quality requirements.
* Evaluate engineering accuracy, process reasoning, calculation methods, unit consistency, clarity, formatting, and instruction compliance.
* Verify mass balances, energy balances, material properties, conversion factors, and numerical results.
* Assess content involving thermodynamics, fluid flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, reaction engineering, and separation processes.
* Review chemical process designs, operating conditions, equipment specifications, and plant performance scenarios.
* Check calculations for correct equations, assumptions, boundary conditions, intermediate steps, and final conclusions.
* Identify dimensional errors, incorrect process variables, unsupported assumptions, and misleading engineering recommendations.
* Evaluate process safety considerations involving pressure, temperature, chemical compatibility, containment, and hazardous operations.
* Flag recommendations that could create operational, environmental, health, or industrial safety risks.
* Review the application of engineering codes, industry standards, technical specifications, and accepted practices.
* Assess process flow descriptions, piping and instrumentation concepts, equipment data, tables, graphs, and technical summaries.
* Confirm that AI-generated content appropriately distinguishes general engineering information from decisions requiring professional review.
* Spot-check submissions completed by trainers, engineers, annotators, reviewers, and QA contributors.
* Provide clear written feedback explaining each technical issue and the required corrective action.
* Escalate recurring, critical, or safety-related quality concerns to project stakeholders.
* Communicate guideline updates, workflow changes, and chemical engineering review standards through Discord and other collaboration tools.
* Respond to contributor questions involving calculations, process design, equipment, safety, standards, and rubric interpretation.
* Contact inactive trainers and QAs, encourage participation, record follow-ups, and flag availability concerns.
* Create and maintain style guides, FAQs, trackers, quality notes, reference examples, honeypots, calibration tasks, and onboarding materials.
* Conduct remote onboarding and technical training sessions for chemical engineering trainers and reviewers.
* Ensure contributors apply updated engineering review standards consistently as projects evolve.
* Analyze repeated quality failures and recommend improvements to technical review workflows.
* Maintain organized records of reviews, feedback, contributor performance, and corrective actions.
Ideal Profile
* Bachelor\'s, Master\'s, or PhD degree in Chemical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
* Minimum 3 years of professional experience in chemical engineering, process engineering, plant operations, technical consulting, research, teaching, or quality assurance.
* Strong English communication skills for interpreting technical instructions and delivering precise written feedback.
* Solid understanding of chemical engineering mathematics, process calculations, and industrial systems.
* Strong knowledge of mass and energy balances, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, mass transfer, and reaction engineering.
* Ability to review equations, assumptions, units, process conditions, and engineering conclusions accurately.
* Familiarity with separation processes, process control, equipment sizing, plant design, or production optimization.
* Understanding of process safety principles, hazard identification, operating limits, and chemical handling risks.
* Awareness of engineering standards, technical specifications, environmental requirements, and industry practices.
* Experience preparing or reviewing process calculations, technical reports, operating procedures, design notes, or engineering documentation.
* Ability to recognize unsafe recommendations, incorrect calculations, and incomplete technical reasoning.
* Strong analytical judgment with careful attention to numerical, scientific, and operational detail.
* Experience leading or supporting engineers, researchers, educators, reviewers, annotators, or QA teams is strongly preferred.
* Ability to apply detailed review rubrics consistently across large volumes of technical content.
* Confidence using Discord, Google Sheets, Google Docs, trackers, dashboards, and project management systems.
* Experience developing calibration exercises, onboarding resources, style guides, and quality documentation is beneficial.
* Familiarity with AI training, data annotation, large language model evaluation, technical QA, or rubric-based review is advantageous.
