Role Context
The Chemistry Quality Assurance Lead will oversee the reliability of scientific material used to train and evaluate advanced artificial intelligence systems. Assignments may include chemistry explanations, numerical problem-solving, reaction pathways, molecular structures, laboratory scenarios, analytical interpretations, nomenclature, and safety-sensitive recommendations.
The successful candidate will identify flawed calculations, invalid reaction logic, incorrect assumptions, missing units, unsupported claims, unsafe procedures, inaccurate terminology, and incomplete scientific explanations. The role also involves guiding contributors, maintaining calibration materials, supporting onboarding, and improving scalable chemistry quality workflows.
Key Responsibilities
* Review chemistry AI training items against detailed project rubrics and scientific quality requirements.
* Evaluate scientific accuracy, chemical reasoning, calculation methods, unit consistency, clarity, formatting, and instruction compliance.
* Check stoichiometric calculations, concentrations, yields, conversions, equilibrium expressions, and thermodynamic results.
* Assess reaction mechanisms, reagent selection, product predictions, chemical equations, and molecular transformations.
* Review content involving organic, inorganic, physical, analytical, pharmaceutical, materials, and biological chemistry.
* Verify formulas, assumptions, units, significant figures, intermediate steps, and final conclusions.
* Identify unsupported scientific claims, fabricated facts, incorrect nomenclature, and misleading explanations.
* Evaluate spectroscopy, chromatography, titration, molecular structure, and laboratory data interpretations.
* Review chemical terminology, notation, symbols, structures, and scientific conventions for consistency.
* Flag unsafe recommendations involving hazardous substances, incompatible chemicals, pressure, heat, exposure, or uncontrolled reactions.
* Assess whether laboratory procedures appropriately address personal protective equipment, ventilation, waste handling, storage, and emergency precautions.
* Identify overconfident guidance involving dosing, chemical handling, environmental exposure, or health-related applications.
* Spot-check work completed by trainers, researchers, annotators, technical writers, reviewers, and QA contributors.
* Provide precise written feedback explaining each scientific issue and the required correction.
* Escalate recurring, critical, or safety-related quality concerns to project stakeholders.
* Communicate guideline updates, workflow changes, and chemistry-specific review standards through Discord and other collaboration tools.
* Answer contributor questions concerning reactions, formulas, units, terminology, laboratory methods, safety, and rubric interpretation.
* Contact inactive trainers and QAs, encourage participation, document follow-ups, and report availability concerns.
* Create and maintain style guides, FAQs, trackers, quality notes, examples, honeypots, calibration tasks, and onboarding resources.
* Conduct remote onboarding and training sessions for chemistry trainers and reviewers.
* Ensure all contributors apply updated chemistry standards consistently as projects evolve.
* Analyze recurring error patterns and recommend practical improvements to scientific review workflows.
* Maintain accurate records of reviews, feedback, contributor performance, and corrective actions.
Ideal Profile
* Bachelor\'s, Master\'s, or PhD degree in Chemistry, Chemical Sciences, Biochemistry, Materials Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, or a closely related discipline.
* Minimum 3 years of professional experience in chemistry research, laboratory work, teaching, scientific writing, technical review, formulation, analytical chemistry, quality control, or a related field.
* Strong English communication skills for interpreting technical instructions and delivering clear scientific feedback.
* Thorough understanding of general, organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry.
* Strong knowledge of thermodynamics, kinetics, equilibrium, stoichiometry, spectroscopy, and reaction mechanisms.
* Ability to review equations, calculations, structures, assumptions, units, and scientific conclusions accurately.
* Familiarity with laboratory documentation, analytical methods, chromatography, spectroscopy, titration, or chemical literature review.
* Knowledge of chemical nomenclature, molecular structure interpretation, and scientific notation.
* Understanding of safety data sheets, hazardous material controls, laboratory precautions, and responsible chemical handling.
* Ability to identify unsafe recommendations, unsupported conclusions, and scientifically inaccurate reasoning.
* Experience preparing or reviewing laboratory reports, research papers, technical notes, protocols, or analytical results.
* Strong attention to numerical, conceptual, procedural, and terminology details.
* Experience leading or supporting researchers, educators, technical writers, annotators, reviewers, or QA teams is strongly preferred.
* Ability to apply detailed rubrics consistently across high-volume scientific review tasks.
* Confidence using Discord, Google Sheets, Google Docs, trackers, dashboards, and project management systems.
