Role Context
The Associate Urban Designer - Master Planning will support Parsons by contributing to the delivery and leadership of major urban development and master planning projects that shape future city environments. The role combines creative design thinking, planning policy understanding, data analysis, multidisciplinary coordination, and client-facing communication to produce integrated urban strategies, technical reports, visual materials, and high-quality masterplans across multiple design stages.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead master planning and urban design projects across pre-concept, concept, and detailed masterplan stages.
* Coordinate with internal disciplines and external sub-consultants to deliver coherent multidisciplinary planning and design solutions.
* Provide technical leadership and mentorship to urban designers within the team.
* Support the professional development of junior and mid-level urban design team members through guidance and review.
* Perform and manage complex urban design and planning tasks including research, analysis, design development, documentation, and presentation preparation.
* Review project outputs to ensure compliance with local authority requirements, planning policies, client objectives, and international best practices.
* Structure and coordinate the preparation of masterplans, planning reports, technical documentation, presentations, and visual communication materials.
* Analyze economic, social, spatial, demographic, and urban data to inform planning strategies and design decisions.
* Develop technical inputs that support high-quality reports, plans, illustrative layouts, and client presentations.
* Support engagement with clients, stakeholders, authorities, and multidisciplinary project teams.
* Translate development objectives into practical, robust, and context-sensitive master planning strategies.
* Coordinate urban design inputs with architecture, landscape, transport, infrastructure, environment, sustainability, and development planning teams.
* Support project leads with technical inputs for proposals, new opportunities, and business development submissions.
* Reconcile competing stakeholder needs, planning constraints, design aspirations, and regulatory requirements.
* Maintain high standards of design quality, documentation accuracy, and visual presentation across assigned projects.
Ideal Profile
* Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Architecture, or a closely related field is required.
* Minimum 10 years of professional experience in urban planning and urban design consultancy.
* Demonstrated experience producing large-scale masterplans, conceptual designs, illustrative layouts, and planning reports.
* Strong understanding of urban design principles, planning frameworks, development processes, and city-making strategies.
* Experience coordinating multidisciplinary teams within complex project environments.
* Proven ability to perform in a lead capacity on urban design or master planning projects.
* Creative thinker with a strong understanding of current urban planning and design best practices.
* Thorough understanding of local statutes, planning rules, development regulations, and authority requirements.
* Ability to represent diverse interests in the planning and design process and reconcile conflicting demands.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Proficiency in design and visualization tools such as AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUp, Rhino, or similar platforms.
* Master’s degree in Urban Design, Urban Planning, Architecture, or a related discipline will be an advantage.
* Professional membership or accreditation such as RIBA, RTPI, AICP, or equivalent will be preferred.
* Experience in international consultancy environments or large-scale urban developments will be an advantage.
* Experience working within Middle East planning frameworks will be an advantage.
