Role Context
The ATC Signalling Expert - Rail Systems will support the delivery of advanced train control and signalling systems across a large-scale railway infrastructure programme. The role focuses on design review, technical coordination, contractor oversight, installation supervision, testing and commissioning, safety assurance, interface management, and operational readiness. By ensuring signalling systems are properly integrated with rolling stock, telecommunications, power supply, OCC, stations, and operational environments, the position helps support safe, reliable, high-capacity railway operations.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead and support the design and development of ATC and signalling systems, including CBTC, ETCS where applicable, interlocking, train protection, cab signalling, and control systems.
* Oversee installation and testing of ATC and CBTC systems to ensure compliance with project specifications, programme requirements, safety standards, and operational objectives.
* Coordinate with contractors, designers, operators, authorities, and project teams to ensure signalling equipment is installed accurately and delivered on schedule.
* Review technical specifications, system design drawings, signalling documentation, interface requirements, method statements, and testing procedures.
* Coordinate and supervise testing and commissioning activities to verify signalling system functionality, safety performance, integration, and operational readiness.
* Identify, document, investigate, and resolve issues arising during design, installation, testing, commissioning, and system integration phases.
* Maintain accurate records of contractor activities, installation progress, inspection results, test outcomes, system performance, and open technical actions.
* Ensure signalling works comply with safety regulations, project requirements, international railway standards, and approved quality procedures.
* Conduct site inspections and support safety audits to confirm adherence to approved installation, testing, and safety protocols.
* Ensure signalling systems integrate effectively with rolling stock, telecommunications, power supply, OCC, SCADA, depot systems, platform systems, and operational control environments.
* Support Systems Engineering activities including requirements definition, allocation, verification, validation, and traceability.
* Ensure compliance with EN 50126, EN 50128, EN 50129, and relevant international railway standards.
* Contribute to RAMS, System Assurance, safety case development, hazard analysis, and evidence preparation for approvals.
* Participate in design reviews, HAZID sessions, HAZOP workshops, risk assessments, technical coordination meetings, and value engineering exercises.
* Support preparation and review of technical specifications, employer requirements, tender documentation, and specialist signalling submissions.
* Coordinate with stakeholders, operators, and authorities to support system compatibility, interface resolution, approvals, and operational acceptance.
* Provide technical guidance to junior engineers and support multidisciplinary coordination across rail systems, civil works, stations, operations, and airport interfaces where applicable.
* Troubleshoot complex electronic, train control, and signalling system issues using practical engineering judgment and system-level analysis.
Ideal Profile
* Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Railway Engineering, or a related discipline from a recognized university.
* Associate degree or technical diploma may be considered for candidates with extensive specialist signalling experience.
* Minimum 15 years of experience in ATC, CBTC, ETCS, or railway signalling systems within the rail industry.
* Minimum 10 years of experience on rail projects, rail operations, or major railway infrastructure programmes in the GCC or international markets.
* Proven experience with CBTC, ETCS, or equivalent high-capacity signalling systems.
* Strong hands-on background in installation, testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and performance verification of signalling systems.
* Experience overseeing contractor works related to electronic systems, signalling installation, testing, inspection, and commissioning.
* Good understanding of interlocking systems, track circuits, radio systems, train protection, cab signalling, and operational control interfaces.
* Strong experience in system integration, multidisciplinary interface management, and railway operational coordination.
* Experience in Systems Engineering processes, requirements management, verification, validation, and traceability.
* Strong knowledge of RAMS, System Assurance, safety case development, and railway safety compliance.
* Experience working on large-scale rail infrastructure or express railway programmes.
* Exposure to airport integration, high-demand transport hubs, or station operational interfaces will be an advantage.
* Professional certification or membership in a relevant engineering or railway institute will be an advantage.
* Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills for complex rail systems environments.
* Excellent communication and coordination skills with the ability to work effectively with contractors, operators, authorities, consultants, and multidisciplinary teams.
