Role Context
The Geotechnical
This position is particularly relevant to transportation and rail-related development, where ground conditions can materially affect alignment, structural performance, construction methodology, cost, and long-term asset stability. The engineer will work across investigation, analysis, design review, and construction support activities while maintaining compliance with applicable technical standards.
Key Responsibilities
* Plan and support geotechnical site investigations for infrastructure and construction projects.
* Review available geological, geotechnical, and site information before field activities begin.
* Participate in site assessments, borehole investigations, soil sampling, and related subsurface exploration.
* Interpret soil profiles, laboratory results, field testing data, and groundwater information.
* Evaluate ground conditions and identify engineering constraints that could influence project design.
* Analyze geotechnical data and prepare clear technical recommendations for project teams.
* Develop input for shallow and deep foundation design based on site conditions and structural requirements.
* Support settlement assessment, bearing capacity evaluation, and foundation performance reviews.
* Undertake or assist with slope stability analysis for cuttings, embankments, and other earth structures.
* Assess requirements for ground improvement and recommend technically appropriate treatment methods.
* Review earthworks concepts and advise on excavation, fill, compaction, and soil suitability where required.
* Identify geotechnical hazards and develop practical mitigation measures.
* Coordinate geotechnical recommendations with civil, structural, transportation, and project management teams.
* Ensure geotechnical assumptions are reflected accurately in design drawings and specifications.
* Review consultant, contractor, and investigation reports for technical accuracy and completeness.
* Check geotechnical drawings, calculations, and specifications against project requirements.
* Provide technical clarification on soil and ground engineering matters during design development.
* Monitor relevant construction activities to confirm that geotechnical requirements are being implemented correctly.
* Support resolution of unexpected ground conditions encountered during excavation or construction.
* Review field observations and recommend adjustments where actual subsurface conditions differ from design assumptions.
* Assist with geotechnical risk registers and maintain awareness of issues that may affect safety, programme, or cost.
* Apply relevant codes, standards, project specifications, and safety requirements.
* Prepare geotechnical reports, technical notes, recommendations, and supporting documentation.
* Communicate technical findings in a concise form suitable for multidisciplinary design and construction teams.
* Maintain accurate project records for investigation data, calculations, reviews, and site observations.
* Use geotechnical analysis and reporting software where appropriate to improve consistency and technical accuracy.
* Contribute to rail or transportation project delivery by addressing ground-related issues affecting structures, embankments, cuttings, and associated infrastructure.
Ideal Profile
Candidates should hold a bachelor\'s degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline and have at least five years of relevant professional experience.
A strong foundation in soil mechanics, geotechnical investigation, foundation design, slope stability, and ground behavior is required. Applicants should be comfortable interpreting investigation data and using it to develop defensible engineering recommendations.
Experience with geotechnical analysis software and technical reporting tools will be advantageous. Previous exposure to rail projects is preferred because the role supports transportation infrastructure where earthworks, structural foundations, and ground performance are critical to project reliability.
The position suits an analytical engineer who can investigate technical problems methodically, communicate clearly with multidisciplinary teams, and remain effective when site conditions differ from initial assumptions.
