Role Context
The Stormwater Design Manager - Drainage will lead and coordinate drainage design activities for major infrastructure assignments, ensuring technical quality, design consistency, production efficiency, and compliance with project requirements. The role supports successful project delivery by supervising design personnel, defining scope requirements, reviewing calculations and drawings, coordinating across disciplines, resolving technical issues, and maintaining a strong focus on design excellence, schedule control, and engineering profitability.
Key Responsibilities
* Supervise drainage design personnel and direct technical engineering assignments across large infrastructure projects or multiple smaller project packages.
* Review design work to confirm compliance with applicable codes, standards, project procedures, client requirements, and quality expectations.
* Monitor productivity, technical performance, workload balance, and delivery efficiency of assigned engineering and design team members.
* Make staffing assignments and reassignments as project priorities, schedules, and technical needs change.
* Support performance reviews, corrective actions, training recommendations, development planning, promotion inputs, and salary action recommendations for assigned personnel.
* Help define the scope of work, design criteria, delivery schedule, technical standards, and engineering procedures for project assignments.
* Prepare or review budget estimates, staffing requirements, design resource plans, and delivery assumptions for the agreed scope and schedule.
* Provide technical direction on stormwater drainage design issues, including design alternatives, practical solutions, engineering decisions, and specialist support needs.
* Coordinate with internal engineering teams, project management, consultants, and external technical resources when additional discipline expertise is required.
* Promote technical excellence and continuous improvement across drainage design production, checking, review, and coordination processes.
* Ensure adequate checking and verification are completed in line with discipline checking policies, quality procedures, and project requirements.
* Maintain clear communication with project staff and engineers from other disciplines to ensure drainage design work is fully coordinated with roads, utilities, structures, public realm, and other infrastructure interfaces.
* Advise engineering and project management on technical risks, staffing constraints, design delays, scope changes, production issues, and matters that may affect project completion or profitability.
* Initiate, review, and support change order requests involving additions, deletions, or modifications to the original design scope.
* Recommend suitable design methods, engineering standards, equipment use, software tools, and discipline practices for drainage and infrastructure design delivery.
* Supervise the production of engineering drawings, drainage layouts, hydraulic design outputs, design calculations, reports, and supporting technical documentation.
* Apply current engineering technology and appropriate design software to improve design accuracy, coordination, and project delivery efficiency.
Ideal Profile
* Bachelor\'s degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline.
* Minimum 15 years of related engineering design experience, with strong exposure to stormwater drainage and infrastructure projects.
* Proven ability to perform in a lead design capacity across complex civil engineering or infrastructure assignments.
* Strong technical knowledge of stormwater drainage systems, hydraulic design, civil infrastructure interfaces, design coordination, and engineering quality procedures.
* Thorough understanding of industry practices, local regulations, engineering standards, design codes, and project delivery requirements.
* Experience supervising design teams, managing design production, reviewing technical outputs, and coordinating multidisciplinary design inputs.
* Ability to define scope, schedule, design criteria, budget requirements, staffing needs, and discipline delivery plans.
* Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical matters clearly to engineers, project managers, clients, consultants, and other stakeholders.
* Professional Engineer registration or equivalent professional certification may be required depending on project and client requirements.
* Ability to select and apply suitable engineering software, digital tools, and current technology for drainage design and infrastructure projects.
* Previous experience in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates, or the wider Middle East is preferred.
* Strong leadership mindset with practical judgment, quality awareness, and the ability to keep design teams focused on safe, compliant, and buildable solutions.
