Role Context
The SQL Quality Assurance Lead will oversee the technical reliability of database content used to train and evaluate advanced artificial intelligence systems. Assignments may include reviewing SQL queries, database explanations, schema designs, analytics workflows, optimization recommendations, and data-modeling decisions.
The successful candidate will identify invalid syntax, incorrect joins, duplicate counting, aggregation errors, inefficient execution plans, dialect mismatches, weak schema assumptions, and SQL injection risks. The position also includes contributor coaching, onboarding, quality documentation, calibration, performance tracking, and continuous improvement of SQL review workflows.
Key Responsibilities
* Review SQL and database AI training items against detailed project rubrics and technical quality standards.
* Evaluate query correctness, schema understanding, join logic, aggregation accuracy, readability, formatting, and instruction compliance.
* Execute or logically trace SQL queries to confirm whether they return the intended results.
* Review SELECT statements, filters, joins, grouping, sorting, subqueries, common table expressions, and window functions.
* Identify invalid syntax, incorrect aliases, missing conditions, ambiguous columns, and incomplete query logic.
* Detect duplicate counting, incorrect aggregation levels, unintended row multiplication, and flawed grouping.
* Evaluate INNER JOIN, LEFT JOIN, RIGHT JOIN, FULL JOIN, CROSS JOIN, and self-join usage.
* Review queries involving ranking, running totals, partitions, lead and lag functions, and analytical windows.
* Assess schema designs, entity relationships, keys, constraints, normalization, and data integrity.
* Verify the appropriate use of primary keys, foreign keys, unique constraints, defaults, and nullability rules.
* Review transactions, isolation considerations, locking behavior, and data consistency recommendations.
* Identify inefficient queries, unnecessary scans, weak predicates, poor indexing strategies, and avoidable complexity.
* Evaluate execution-plan interpretations and optimization recommendations for technical accuracy.
* Check compatibility across PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, SQLite, BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift, and other supported dialects.
* Flag SQL injection risks, unsafe dynamic queries, exposed credentials, and insecure database practices.
* Assess data warehouse queries, reporting logic, dimensional models, and business intelligence workflows.
* Review AI-generated explanations for accuracy, completeness, clarity, and alignment with the accompanying query.
* Spot-check work completed by analysts, engineers, trainers, annotators, educators, reviewers, and QA contributors.
* Provide precise written feedback explaining each defect and the corrective action required.
* Escalate recurring, critical, security-sensitive, or production-impacting quality concerns.
* Communicate updated guidelines, workflow changes, and SQL-specific expectations through Discord.
* Respond to contributor questions involving joins, aggregations, window functions, dialects, schemas, performance, security, and rubric interpretation.
* Contact inactive contributors, encourage participation, record follow-ups, and report availability concerns.
* Create and maintain SQL style guides, FAQs, trackers, quality notes, examples, honeypots, calibration tasks, and onboarding materials.
* Conduct remote onboarding and technical training sessions for SQL trainers and reviewers.
* Ensure contributors apply updated database review standards consistently.
* Analyze recurring quality gaps and recommend practical improvements to SQL QA workflows.
* Maintain accurate records of evaluations, feedback, contributor performance, and corrective actions.
Ideal Profile
* Bachelor\'s or Master\'s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, Statistics, Business Analytics, or a related discipline.
* Equivalent professional database or data engineering experience may be considered.
* Minimum 3 years of professional experience using SQL for analytics, backend development, database engineering, business intelligence, reporting, data warehousing, QA, teaching, or technical review.
* Strong English communication skills for interpreting detailed guidelines and delivering clear technical feedback.
* Thorough understanding of SELECT, WHERE, JOINs, GROUP BY, HAVING, ORDER BY, subqueries, and common table expressions.
* Strong knowledge of window functions, indexes, constraints, transactions, normalization, and schema design.
* Ability to identify incorrect joins, aggregation errors, duplicate counting, invalid syntax, and incomplete explanations.
* Experience reviewing query performance, execution plans, indexing decisions, and database bottlenecks.
* Understanding of SQL injection, parameterized queries, permissions, and database security practices.
* Familiarity with PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, SQLite, BigQuery, Snowflake, or Redshift is preferred.
* Experience with data warehouses, entity-relationship modeling, dashboards, reporting platforms, or BI tools is advantageous.
* Ability to distinguish dialect-specific syntax and identify incompatible recommendations.
* Strong debugging skills with careful attention to data grain, null handling, edge cases, and result accuracy.
* Experience leading or supporting analysts, engineers, trainers, reviewers, annotators, educators, or QA teams is strongly preferred.
* Ability to apply detailed rubrics consistently across high-volume technical review assignments.
* Confidence using Discord, Google Sheets, Google Docs, GitHub, trackers, dashboards, and project management systems.
* Experience creating style guides, calibration tasks, onboarding resources, FAQs, and technical documentation is beneficial.
* Familiarity with AI training, data annotation, large language model evaluation, SQL QA, code review, or rubric-based technical assessment is advantageous.
