Role Context
The Careers Counsellor - University Guidance will support students at Yas American Academy with personal, academic, and career development from early planning through postsecondary transition. The role focuses on implementing the school’s careers and university guidance programme, helping students identify suitable local and international university options, supporting applications, engaging parents, and building strong links with postsecondary institutions. By combining counselling expertise, administrative accuracy, confidentiality, and student-centered guidance, the position helps learners prepare confidently for higher education and future career success.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide students with guidance on university choices, career pathways, academic planning, and skills required for future success.
* Implement the school’s careers and university guidance policy and programme in line with student needs and school expectations.
* Support students from Cycle 2 onward in understanding career aspirations, subject choices, extracurricular planning, and portfolio development.
* Track and assess student progress, offering tailored support to help students achieve academic goals and career ambitions.
* Assist students with local and international postsecondary options, ensuring each student is supported in submitting at least one suitable application.
* Provide administrative support for university applications, including recommendation letters, personal statement review, application tracking, and document preparation.
* Help students prepare for postsecondary transition by supporting career planning, decision-making, university readiness, and life beyond school.
* Engage parents throughout the guidance process and promote student agency in university and career decision-making.
* Support gifted and talented students with advanced pathways, specialist programmes, scholarships, mentorship opportunities, and aspiration planning.
* Support students with additional learning needs by exploring appropriate university routes, alternative pathways, and tailored transition options.
* Build and maintain relationships with local postsecondary institutions to create opportunities for admissions visits, internships, and student engagement.
* Organize careers and university guidance events, information sessions, workshops, and exploration activities for students and parents.
* Maintain a guidance calendar covering key application dates, university events, deadlines, and student support milestones.
* Foster strong alumni relationships and track alumni pathways to support future student guidance and school insight.
* Participate in ongoing continuous professional development to remain updated on guidance practices, application processes, and postsecondary trends.
* Undertake school duties, extracurricular activities, and wider professional responsibilities as expected by the school.
* Maintain the highest standards of confidentiality, safeguarding awareness, professionalism, and ethical student support.
Ideal Profile
* QFE 7 Bachelor’s Degree in any subject with required continuous professional development, or Bachelor’s Degree with former or current teacher or educator experience.
* Minimum 2 years of experience in school counselling or another counselling-related role.
* Appropriate license to carry out student counselling.
* Strong understanding of university guidance, career pathways, student counselling, and postsecondary planning.
* Experience supporting university applications, recommendation letters, personal statements, and student portfolio development.
* Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust with students and parents.
* Demonstrable organizational skills with the ability to manage application timelines, events, student records, and guidance documentation.
* Strong desire to help others and the ability to inspire respect, trust, and confidence.
* High emotional and physical energy to support a wide range of student concerns, aspirations, and transition needs.
* Ability to work with confidentiality, discretion, and professionalism at all times.
* Good communication skills with students, parents, colleagues, universities, and external institutions.
* Experience supporting gifted and talented students, students with additional learning needs, and diverse learner pathways will be an advantage.
* Strong understanding of school culture, safeguarding expectations, and student wellbeing.
* Police clearance and satisfactory references are required.
