Role Context
The Head of Geography will lead the planning, delivery, and improvement of Geography teaching across key stages, with a focus on GCSE and A Level outcomes. The role supports curriculum quality, student progress, teacher collaboration, assessment standards, and the wider academic culture of the school, while promoting curiosity about people, places, environments, sustainability, and global change.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead the Geography department and promote high standards of teaching, learning, assessment, and student achievement.
* Plan and support a strong Geography curriculum for GCSE and A Level classes.
* Share exemplary teaching practices with colleagues through coaching, collaboration, and subject leadership.
* Monitor student progress and use assessment data to identify gaps, improve outcomes, and guide intervention.
* Create engaging lessons that develop geographical knowledge, analytical thinking, fieldwork skills, and global awareness.
* Support consistent classroom practice, positive learning routines, and inclusive teaching across the department.
* Contribute to curriculum reviews, resource development, academic planning, and school improvement priorities.
* Work closely with senior leaders, teachers, students, and parents to support academic success and student wellbeing.
* Encourage participation in extra-curricular activities, community events, fieldwork opportunities, and wider school life.
* Promote the school values of growth, mindfulness, ambition, and continuous improvement in daily practice.
* Maintain accurate records, support reporting processes, and communicate progress clearly when required.
* Uphold safeguarding requirements, school policies, professional conduct, and GEMS standards at all times.
Ideal Profile
* B.Ed, Bachelor’s degree with PGCE, PGDE, or equivalent recognised teaching qualification.
* Proven experience teaching Geography to GCSE and A Level classes.
* Experience in subject leadership, department coordination, or academic improvement preferred.
* Strong knowledge of British curriculum Geography, assessment practice, and examination requirements.
* Proven track record of delivering outstanding teaching and learning.
* Ability to support colleagues by sharing effective classroom strategies and subject expertise.
* Creative and enthusiastic approach to teaching both inside and outside the classroom.
* Excellent interpersonal skills for working with students, parents, colleagues, and school leaders.
* Strong commitment to professional growth, student achievement, safeguarding, and school community life.
* Willingness to contribute to extra-curricular programmes and community-based events.
* UK-enhanced DBS, police clearance, or equivalent background check required for appointment.
