Role Context
The Head of History and Politics will lead department planning, teaching quality, assessment standards, student intervention, and curriculum continuity across relevant year groups and examination courses. The role supports academic improvement through data analysis, staff leadership, resource management, enrichment activities, and effective learning environments that help students build historical understanding, political awareness, critical thinking, and examination confidence.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead the History and Politics department in line with the school vision, academic priorities, and high standards of achievement.
* Develop and implement department policies, teaching practices, and learning strategies that improve student outcomes.
* Establish, monitor, and evaluate short, medium, and long-term plans for subject development.
* Use assessment data to identify underachieving students and implement targeted action plans.
* Analyse school and department data to support planning, policy development, intervention, and school self-evaluation.
* Develop, review, and improve schemes of work for all relevant year groups and courses.
* Ensure curriculum coverage, progression, and continuity for students across History, Politics, and related humanities subjects.
* Provide appropriate support for SEN-POD, gifted and talented, and EAL students within department planning.
* Set clear expectations for staff regarding achievement, behaviour, lesson quality, and student engagement.
* Evaluate teaching and learning within the department and take practical steps to strengthen classroom practice.
* Support after-school booster and revision sessions for IGCSE and IB Diploma students.
* Contribute to the school’s CAS programme and wider enrichment opportunities.
* Performance manage department staff in line with school policies and professional expectations.
* Deploy staff, resources, accommodation, and learning materials effectively to support strong teaching.
* Manage department resource and CapEx budgets responsibly and efficiently.
* Create a stimulating learning environment that supports inquiry, debate, academic confidence, and independent thinking.
* Work collaboratively with senior leaders, teachers, students, and parents to maintain high standards.
* Uphold safeguarding expectations, school policies, professional conduct, and Aldar Education values at all times.
Ideal Profile
* Bachelor’s Degree in History, Politics, Humanities, or a closely related subject.
* PGCE, QTS, or another recognised teacher qualification.
* Minimum 6 years of teaching experience.
* Experience teaching the UK curriculum or English National Curriculum.
* Proven experience improving student achievement and closing learning gaps.
* Strong subject knowledge across History, Politics, humanities education, and examination preparation.
* Ability to lead curriculum planning, assessment review, teacher development, and department improvement.
* Experience supporting SEN-POD, gifted and talented, and EAL learners.
* Strong leadership skills with the ability to guide colleagues and contribute to school development.
* Confident use of data to inform planning, intervention, and academic decision-making.
* Commitment to enrichment, revision programmes, and wider student development.
* Passionate and caring approach to education, student wellbeing, and inclusive learning.
* Satisfactory references and police clearance required for appointment.
