Role Context
The Head of Physical Education - Primary will lead the strategic direction, curriculum quality, teaching standards, staff development, and operational effectiveness of the Physical Education department. The role supports a high-quality learning environment where students build confidence, physical skills, teamwork, wellbeing, and a positive attitude toward active lifestyles. By combining strong educational leadership, data-informed planning, safe resource management, and inclusive practice, the position helps improve student outcomes and supports the wider school vision.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop and implement department policies and practices that reflect the school’s vision, aims, high achievement standards, and commitment to effective teaching and learning.
* Establish, monitor, and evaluate short-term, medium-term, and long-term plans for the development of the Physical Education department.
* Use student data to identify underachievement and develop action plans that support improved progress and participation.
* Analyse relevant school and department data to inform policies, school self-evaluation, and improvement planning.
* Ensure appropriate schemes of work are developed, reviewed, and evaluated for all year groups and courses.
* Provide suitable curriculum provision for students with special educational needs, students of determination, gifted and talented learners, and EAL students.
* Ensure curriculum coverage, continuity, and progression in Physical Education for all students.
* Establish clear assessment, recording, and reporting practices for student achievement.
* Set expectations for staff regarding achievement standards, teaching quality, learning outcomes, and student behaviour.
* Evaluate the quality of teaching and learning within the department and take action to improve practice where needed.
* Support contribution to the school’s CAS Programme and relevant after-school booster or revision sessions where applicable.
* Performance manage team members in line with the school performance management policy.
* Build constructive working relationships with staff through collaboration, accountability, support, and high professional standards.
* Hold regular department meetings with clear agendas and minutes, focusing on student achievement, teaching quality, and departmental progress.
* Deploy staff and resources efficiently to support high-quality learning and safe department operations.
* Maintain effective control of department resources and CapEx budgets.
* Use available facilities and learning spaces to create a stimulating and safe environment for Physical Education.
* Ensure risks are properly assessed and health and safety requirements are followed at all times.
* Lead or support one after-school activity each term and contribute to wider school activities.
* Undertake staff duty rota responsibilities, cover duties, and examination invigilation when required.
* Support academic mentoring and extended learning responsibilities where assigned.
* Carry out additional responsibilities assigned by the Principal in line with school needs.
Ideal Profile
* Master’s degree and certification in Educational Leadership.
* Qualified teacher with relevant Physical Education or education-related credentials.
* Teaching experience in an international school setting.
* Minimum 5 years of school administrative or leadership experience as Assistant Principal, Associate Principal, Head of Division, Head of Department, or equivalent.
* Leadership experience in curriculum development, instructional strategies, standards-based assessment, and school improvement.
* Knowledge of IB programmes and recent educational developments will be an advantage.
* Knowledge of UAE Ministry of Education and ADEK regulations related to curriculum, assessment, compliance, and school operations.
* Recent IB CPD will be beneficial.
* Strong commitment to international education, student wellbeing, inclusion, and high achievement.
* Ability to prioritise multiple projects and respond effectively to simultaneous requests from different school areas.
* Ability to initiate and manage change in a school environment.
* Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to resolve conflict, motivate staff, support collaboration, and promote sound decision-making.
