Role Context
The Librarian - School Library Services will support the learning culture at Muna British Academy by managing library resources, guiding students in research and information literacy, and creating a welcoming environment that encourages reading and independent study. The role connects library operations with classroom learning by sourcing curriculum-related materials, maintaining accurate records, supporting teachers, and organizing reading initiatives. Through careful resource management and engaging literacy activities, the Librarian will contribute to student achievement, curiosity, creativity, and lifelong reading habits.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop and deliver library information literacy sessions that help students locate, evaluate, and use books, magazines, online resources, and research materials effectively.
* Support students in becoming independent library users with strong research, reading, and information-handling skills.
* Select and order new books suitable for each section, grade level, curriculum topic, and student interest area.
* Work with teachers to identify resources required for classroom topics, reading development, projects, and curriculum support.
* Distribute topic-related resources to classrooms when required and ensure teachers have access to relevant materials.
* Catalogue all library resources in the automated Destiny Follett library system.
* Classify library resources according to the Dewey system and ensure books are properly labelled, covered, and prepared for student use.
* Maintain the library database and ensure student and teacher records remain accurate and up to date.
* Monitor overdue books and follow up with students and teachers in a professional and supportive manner.
* Manage lost or damaged book procedures, including record updates, payment collection where applicable, and repair of damaged books.
* Maintain an attractive, organized, and welcoming library environment that supports quiet reading, independent study, and student engagement.
* Promote reading through creative displays, book recommendations, reading activities, and access to a wide range of literature.
* Keep up to date with new book releases and age-appropriate reading materials to recommend suitable titles to students.
* Arrange author visits, book fairs, and reading-related events that enrich the school’s literacy culture.
* Run the school Book Club, manage catalogue orders, consolidate whole-school requests, and distribute books when received.
* Manage book issuing, returns, shelving, and general circulation procedures.
* Liaise with teaching and non-teaching staff and respond to library-related enquiries within the role’s responsibilities.
* Support development of library policies, procedures, and resource management practices.
* Comply with health and safety requirements, school policies, safeguarding expectations, and relevant legislation.
* Attend training linked to library systems, school procedures, student support, and professional responsibilities.
* Undertake additional reasonable duties related to the library function and level of responsibility of the role.
Ideal Profile
* Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Library Studies or a relevant field is preferred.
* Experience working in a school library, academic library, or education support environment will be an advantage.
* Knowledge of library cataloguing, Dewey classification, book circulation, and library database management.
* Experience using Destiny Follett or similar automated library management systems is preferred.
* Strong interest in children’s literature, reading development, information literacy, and curriculum support.
* Ability to select age-appropriate books and learning resources for different grade levels.
* Good organizational skills with the ability to maintain accurate records, catalogues, displays, and library systems.
* Strong communication skills with students, teachers, parents, and school staff.
* Ability to create a warm, attractive, and purposeful library environment that supports reading and independent learning.
* Positive and service-focused approach to supporting students and teachers.
* Attention to detail when cataloguing, labelling, tracking resources, and managing overdue or damaged books.
* Ability to support school events, book fairs, author visits, and reading initiatives.
