Role Context
The School Counsellor will provide confidential student support, promote emotional wellbeing, and work closely with school teams to identify and respond to student welfare needs. The role supports individual counselling, group guidance, parent communication, staff wellbeing, and school-wide programmes that strengthen mental health awareness, student confidence, and a caring school culture.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide one-to-one counselling support to students within professional confidentiality and safeguarding boundaries.
* Assess student needs and determine appropriate support within the school counselling environment.
* Maintain an approachable and accessible counselling service for students, staff, and parents.
* Explain confidentiality limits clearly to students before and during counselling support.
* Offer guidance and advice to students, parents, and staff when emotional health or wellbeing concerns arise.
* Deliver group support sessions when shared student concerns are identified and suitable for group work.
* Communicate with teachers, school nurses, heads of year, and senior leaders regarding student welfare where appropriate.
* Ensure all students have fair and equal access to the school counselling service.
* Monitor school-related factors that may affect students’ emotional wellbeing at individual, year group, or whole-school level.
* Liaise with parents regarding student welfare while respecting confidentiality and safeguarding procedures.
* Guide school staff in recognizing and supporting students facing emotional health or wellbeing challenges.
* Provide counselling support to staff members when needed, including stress, burnout, and work-life balance concerns.
* Refer staff or students to external support services when additional specialist help is required.
* Promote a positive, inclusive, and safe school culture across the learning community.
* Develop and support school-wide counselling and wellbeing programmes for common student needs.
* Serve on the school wellbeing committee and contribute to student and staff wellbeing initiatives.
* Collaborate with teachers, counsellors, and school leaders to identify wellbeing needs and implement practical support.
* Support programmes focused on physical, mental, emotional, and social wellbeing.
* Keep informed about child protection policies and liaise with the child protection coordinator when required.
* Promote awareness of the counselling service through appropriate communication with students, staff, and parents.
* Research workshops, seminars, CPD opportunities, and external resources related to youth wellbeing and counselling.
* Maintain professional knowledge of current counselling practices, student wellbeing trends, and youth development issues.
* Attend external supervision sessions and prepare counselling service reports when requested.
Ideal Profile
* Relevant qualification in counselling, psychology, social work, student wellbeing, or a related field.
* Experience working in a school counselling, student support, or child wellbeing role.
* Strong understanding of student emotional health, safeguarding, confidentiality, and child protection practice.
* Ability to support students with empathy, professionalism, and cultural sensitivity.
* Confident communication skills for working with students, parents, teachers, nurses, and senior school leaders.
* Ability to design and support wellbeing programmes for students and staff.
* Calm and balanced approach when dealing with sensitive welfare concerns.
* Strong documentation, reporting, and case management skills.
* Commitment to professional development and continuous improvement in counselling practice.
* UK-enhanced DBS, police clearance, or equivalent background check required for appointment.
