Role Context
The Assistant Head - Secondary plays a strategic role in maintaining academic excellence, operational efficiency, and student wellbeing across the secondary school phase. This position supports senior leadership by strengthening teaching standards, guiding middle leaders, improving student outcomes, and ensuring the school’s vision and values are reflected in daily practice and long-term planning.
Key Responsibilities
* Support the Assistant Principal Secondary in maintaining a safe, structured, and positive learning environment
* Lead and monitor teaching, learning, and assessment systems to ensure high academic standards across all grades
* Line-manage grade-level leaders by providing mentoring, performance feedback, and leadership support
* Oversee student achievement initiatives including assessments, interventions, progress tracking, and standardized testing
* Collaborate with SLT and academic teams to improve curriculum delivery, review academic programmes, and strengthen instructional strategies
* Support professional development planning and coaching programmes to improve teaching quality and staff growth
* Manage assemblies, thematic events, enrichment programmes, and wider academic opportunities
* Coordinate timetabling, staff coverage, duty allocation, and day-to-day secondary school operations
* Strengthen parental engagement through effective communication, conferences, workshops, and wellbeing support
* Ensure timely completion of reports, forms, data submissions, and school operational requirements
Ideal Profile
* Bachelor Degree in Education or B.Sc degree with PGCE is essential
* Master’s degree is desirable
* Minimum 6 years of experience including 4 consecutive years of outstanding teaching performance
* Minimum 2 years of experience in a middle leadership role
* Proven experience leading school improvement initiatives that raised standards and achievement
* Strong experience working with parents, external agencies, and wider school stakeholders
* Secure knowledge of teaching and learning with strong intervention and improvement strategies
* Strong data analysis skills to diagnose learning gaps and evaluate impact
* Excellent leadership, organisational, and decision-making abilities
* High professionalism with strong confidentiality handling and safeguarding awareness
