The Design and Technology Technician will help create a safe, efficient and well-prepared workshop environment where students can participate confidently in practical design, engineering and fabrication activities. The role connects technical workshop operations with classroom learning by ensuring that tools, machinery, materials and workspaces are ready for use before each practical session.
Working closely with DT teachers and students, the technician will support inquiry-based and project-focused learning while maintaining rigorous standards of equipment care, resource control, risk management and workshop organisation. Reliable technical support will directly influence lesson quality, student safety and the department\'s ability to deliver practical projects effectively.
Key Responsibilities
* Prepare materials, tools, machinery and equipment before Design and Technology practical lessons.
* Set up workshop areas according to lesson requirements and ensure resources are ready for safe student use.
* Support teachers and students during practical sessions while reinforcing correct handling of tools and machinery.
* Inspect workshop machinery, hand tools and technical equipment regularly to confirm they remain safe and operational.
* Perform routine maintenance and basic technical repairs where appropriate.
* Identify equipment faults, unsafe conditions, hazards or incidents and report them promptly.
* Complete workshop safety checks and assist with risk assessments for practical activities.
* Maintain accurate safety, maintenance, inspection and equipment records.
* Monitor DT materials and consumables and maintain suitable stock levels for scheduled projects.
* Support inventory control and arrange material orders when required.
* Store tools, machinery, materials and chemicals securely and according to appropriate safety procedures.
* Keep workshops, preparation rooms and storage spaces clean, organised and ready for teaching.
* Provide practical fabrication and technical assistance for student projects and departmental activities.
* Assist with Design and Technology displays, exhibitions, showcases and school events.
* Support teachers in maintaining efficient day-to-day workshop operations.
* Follow GEMS safeguarding, child protection, confidentiality and professional conduct requirements.
* Ensure workshop practices comply with school, KHDA and GEMS health and safety expectations.
* Maintain appropriate supervision standards when students are participating in practical activities.
Ideal Profile
Candidates should hold a BA degree in Design or a related field and bring practical experience from a workshop, Design and Technology, engineering, manufacturing, construction or comparable technical environment.
Strong familiarity with workshop tools, machinery, materials and safe operating practices is important. The successful candidate should be comfortable working around practical equipment and capable of supporting young people while maintaining clear safety boundaries.
