Role Context

The Head of Department plays a strategic role in strengthening teaching quality, curriculum delivery, and student achievement across the department. This position ensures academic consistency, supports underperforming students through targeted intervention, and leads staff development while maintaining high standards aligned with the school’s vision for excellence and student success.

Key Responsibilities

* Develop and implement departmental policies and practices aligned with the school’s vision and academic standards
* Establish, monitor, and review short, medium, and long-term department development plans
* Use performance data to identify underachieving students and implement action plans for measurable improvement
* Analyse academic results and school performance data to support departmental planning and school improvement strategies
* Ensure schemes of work are current, effective, and regularly reviewed across all year groups and qualifications
* Maintain strong curriculum continuity, progression, and inclusive provision for SEN, POD, G and T, and EAL students
* Set clear expectations for staff regarding teaching quality, student outcomes, and classroom behaviour
* Evaluate teaching and learning standards within the department and lead improvement initiatives where required
* Oversee staff performance management, professional development, and effective resource deployment
* Manage department budgets, facilities, CAS contributions, and after-school booster and revision sessions for examination classes

Ideal Profile

* Bachelor’s Degree in the related subject with PGCE or another recognised teaching qualification
* Minimum 6 years of teaching experience with strong leadership exposure
* Proven experience teaching within the UK curriculum framework
* Strong understanding of curriculum leadership and departmental planning
* Excellent data analysis skills for improving academic performance and intervention planning
* Experience managing teams, staff development, and performance reviews
* Passionate and caring educator with strong commitment to student wellbeing
* Strong communication and collaboration skills across staff, parents, and leadership teams
* Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage multiple priorities
