Role Context
The Head of English plays a strategic leadership role in strengthening curriculum delivery, teaching quality, and academic performance across the English department. This position supports outstanding learning outcomes by guiding teachers, leading interventions, improving assessment systems, and ensuring students achieve excellence in English across I/GCSE and IB pathways.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop and implement departmental policies and practices aligned with the school’s vision and academic standards
* Establish, monitor, and evaluate short, medium, and long-term development plans for the English department
* Use student performance data to identify underachieving learners and implement effective intervention plans
* Analyse academic data to support department planning, policies, and school self-evaluation reporting
* Ensure schemes of work are relevant, updated, and inclusive for SEN, POD, G and T, and EAL students
* Maintain curriculum continuity, progression, and high teaching standards across all year groups and courses
* Establish strong systems for assessing, recording, and reporting student achievement and progress
* Evaluate teaching quality across the department and lead improvement strategies for stronger outcomes
* Lead department meetings, CAS programme contributions, and after-school booster sessions for I/GCSE and IB DP students
* Manage department resources, CapEx budgets, examinations support, and academic mentoring for Year 12 and Year 13 students
Ideal Profile
* BA in English Literature with PGCE is required
* Minimum 6 years of teaching experience with strong English subject leadership exposure
* Proven experience teaching within the UK curriculum framework
* Strong leadership experience in curriculum development, instructional strategies, and assessment systems
* Excellent data analysis skills for improving academic performance and intervention planning
* Experience managing teams, staff development, and department improvement initiatives
* Passionate and caring educator with strong commitment to student wellbeing
* Strong communication and collaboration skills across staff, parents, and leadership teams
* Commitment to extensive enrichment programmes and wider school community involvement
* Clean enhanced police clearance or Disclosure and Barring Services check
