Role Context
The Individual Assistant plays a vital role in supporting students with additional learning needs by helping them participate fully in classroom activities and school life. This position strengthens student confidence, independence, and wellbeing while working closely with teachers, therapists, and families to ensure each child receives the personalised support needed for success.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide one-to-one support for an individual pupil both inside and outside the classroom during the school day
* Assist the student in participating fully in learning activities, group work, and school routines
* Support the pupil’s individual needs including physical, emotional, behavioural, social, and communication requirements
* Follow health and safety procedures including awareness of medical care plans, risk assessments, and emergency evacuation plans
* Provide logistical and personal care support including intimate care where required
* Promote student independence in classroom learning, friendships, organisation, and daily routines
* Work closely with the class teacher and maintain regular, open communication regarding student progress and wellbeing
* Collaborate with Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and other support professionals when required
* Maintain high standards of punctuality, attendance, professionalism, and school conduct
* Attend required training sessions, professional meetings, and continuous development opportunities
Ideal Profile
* Diploma in Special Education Needs or another related qualification with approved equivalency
* Minimum 2 years of SEN experience in a school or educational support environment
* Strong understanding of supporting children with individual learning and behavioural needs
* Ability to provide emotional, social, and academic support in a calm and professional manner
* Strong communication skills with teachers, parents, and external support professionals
* High level of patience, empathy, and commitment to child wellbeing
* Professional approach to safeguarding, confidentiality, and student care
* Positive attitude with strong teamwork and problem-solving abilities
* Ability to manage personal care responsibilities where required
* Strong organisational skills and reliability in daily school support tasks
