The Coatings team is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to focus on supporting the scaling of our operations and product range. This includes executing design and automation projects for integration in any one of Tesla's global facilities. We are looking for someone who is a self-starter and independent worker that can closely collaborate with internal cross-functional teams, external vendors, and technology partners to take a project from concept to full production.
You will partner with product design, simulation, and process engineering to establish injection molding tooling requirements, and create fully detailed 3D CAD tooling design models for die fabrication by tooling suppliers.
What You'll Do
Develop the CAD design of new injection molding tooling from concept thru production, including split lines, slides, ejection, vent and cooling system (e.g. waterlines in tool steel as well as internal and external plumbing)
Provide feedback to product design engineers to achieve balance between product performance and manufacturability from a tooling perspective (e.g. draft angles, rib/boss geometry, etc.)
Incorporate input from flow and thermal simulation engineers into the die design
Capture feedback from injection molding process engineers into new and replacement dies
Innovate new ideas to push the envelope of performance (cycle time, yield, uptime) and minimize risk
Provide technical oversight of tooling suppliers
Assist in the development of tooling design and fabrication schedules, then execute accordingly
Manage parallel, rather than serial, product design, die design, and die fabrication timelines
What You'll Bring
Mechanical design experience (experience with plastic injection molding tool design highly preferred, but other relevant tooling or mechanical design experience can be considered)
Advanced proficiency in 3D CAD, including advanced surfacing and large assemblies (CATIA V5+ preferred)
Knowledge of materials science and understanding of the chemical properties and behavior of materials, such as PUR/PUA and other thermoplastic polymers
Proficiency in CFD / Flow Simulation (Moldflow preferred)
Proficiency in GD&T and understanding of tolerance analysis and other quality improvement tools is essential for reducing process and product variation
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronics, or equivalent experience
