Role Context
This position plays a central role in advancing coral reef monitoring and climate resilience research through a major NYU Abu Dhabi and OceanX collaboration. The selected candidate will support regional scientific missions, training programs, stakeholder engagement, and environmental data systems that strengthen marine conservation efforts and build long-term scientific capacity across Southeast Asia.
Key Responsibilities
* Coordinate and implement multi-year coral reef monitoring programs across Southeast Asia with emphasis on Malaysia
* Support annual field missions aboard the RV OceanXplorer for reef monitoring and applied marine research
* Deliver and maintain standardized coral reef monitoring protocols and ecological assessment methods
* Conduct hands-on training programs for regional research partners and local institutions
* Organize pre-mission and post-mission workshops and support annual Southeast Asia learning exchanges at NYU Abu Dhabi
* Manage reef monitoring datasets, metadata systems, and quality control workflows for open-access scientific outputs
* Support stakeholder coordination across NYUAD, OceanX, Dalio Philanthropies, and regional marine science partners
* Assist in preparing annual reports, progress updates, public communication materials, and scientific briefings
* Strengthen scientific collaboration networks involving researchers, NGOs, policymakers, and conservation agencies
Ideal Profile
* PhD in Marine Biology, Marine Science, Coral Reef Ecology, or a closely related discipline
* Minimum 3 years of relevant professional experience excluding PhD study years
* Strong practical experience in coral reef monitoring programs within Southeast Asia, preferably Malaysia
* Valid SCUBA certification with minimum PADI Advanced Open Water or equivalent
* Experience delivering training programs and working with government agencies or regional environmental partners
* Strong publication record and ability to support scientific communication and stakeholder engagement
