Postdoctoral Associate – Traditional Music and Sound Cultures Job Vacancy in UAE Abdu Dhabi
The Music and Sound Cultures (MaSC) research group at New York University Abu Dhabi is seeking a postdoctoral associate to contribute to the study and dissemination of traditional music and sound cultures in the Arabian Gulf and historically relevant regions. This position offers an opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary research combining anthropology, computational analysis, digital archiving, and artistic-ethnographic approaches.

Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct independent and collaborative research on traditional music practices in the Arabian Gulf, UAE, and historically connected regions such as East Africa and South India
- Develop and implement anthropological, computational, or artistic-ethnographic approaches to study and document music traditions
- Utilize MaSC’s growing collection of audiovisual materials to analyze cross-cultural relationships and influences in Gulf music
- Contribute to digital archiving efforts and the development of tools for computational music analysis
- Engage with local communities, musicians, and cultural practitioners to document and critically explore contemporary music-making traditions
- Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and produce artistic works reflecting on the music and crafts of the region
- Collaborate with MaSC researchers and faculty supervisors, including Profs. Carlos Guedes and Andrew Eisenberg
Required Skills and Experience
Education:
- A doctoral degree in a relevant field such as ethnomusicology, anthropology, computational musicology, digital humanities, or a related discipline
Experience:
- Research experience in the study of music and sound cultures from the Arabian Gulf or historically connected regions
- Experience conducting ethnographic fieldwork in anthropology, music studies, or digital humanities
- Proficiency in qualitative and computational methods for music analysis
Skills:
- Language and musical skills relevant to MaSC’s research agenda
- Ability to work both collaboratively and independently in an interdisciplinary environment
- Strong analytical, communication, and writing skills
- Experience in digital archiving, deep learning, or AI-based music analysis is a plus
