Role Context
The Postdoctoral Associate - Land Economics will support the LANDMark project, a long-term research initiative focused on Land Assets, National Development and Markets. The position will contribute to research on how land, housing, fixed resources, taxation, infrastructure, macroeconomic conditions, and political systems shape economic development and urban outcomes. Hosted within the Social Science Division and connected with the Center for Interacting Urban Networks, the role offers a strong research platform for developing original projects, collaborating with faculty and international scholars, and producing rigorous academic work on land-related economic questions.
Key Responsibilities
* Conduct advanced research on land economics, land assets, national development, urban markets, and fixed-resource dynamics.
* Study the measurement of land prices, including imputation techniques and methods for improving land value data.
* Analyze determinants of land value, including transport infrastructure, health services, education services, and other public investments.
* Examine macroeconomic stability and instability in economies where land operates as a fixed and non-produced asset.
* Investigate taxation of land wealth as a potential alternative to consumption tax and capital tax systems.
* Explore the political economy of land, land taxation, fixed resources, and related policy debates.
* Conduct research on links between land, resource allocation, political conflict, and institutional structures.
* Develop empirical, theoretical, or quantitative research projects aligned with LANDMark themes.
* Collaborate with researchers across economics, engineering, computer science, political science, and urban science.
* Prepare peer-reviewed manuscripts, working papers, research presentations, and academic reports.
* Contribute to research planning within the Center for Interacting Urban Networks and identify potential collaborators.
* Use quantitative methods to analyze land, housing, macroeconomic, labor, urban, spatial, political economy, or conflict-related datasets.
* Participate in seminars, workshops, research meetings, and academic discussions connected to LANDMark and CITIES.
* Maintain strong standards of data quality, research ethics, documentation, and reproducible analysis.
Ideal Profile
* PhD in economics or another quantitative field.
* Candidate should have no more than 5 years from receipt of the PhD degree.
* Research experience in land economics, housing, macroeconomics, labor economics, urban economics, spatial economics, political economy, or conflict studies.
* Strong interest in interdisciplinary research and collaboration across academic fields.
* Ability to lead research projects within the LANDMark project and contribute to the broader CITIES research environment.
* Excellent communication skills in English.
* Ability to work effectively in teams while managing independent research responsibilities.
* Strong quantitative, analytical, and academic writing skills.
* Interest in land prices, land taxation, infrastructure value, public policy, economic development, or urban systems.
* Ability to prepare a research statement outlining specific projects and possible collaborators within the Center.
