Role Context
The Postdoctoral Associate - Population Health will join the Division of Social Science at New York University Abu Dhabi for a research appointment beginning September 1, 2026, subject to final budget approval. The role is available for up to three years and is divided between independent research and collaborative research with Professor Stéphane Helleringer. The position is designed for a researcher who can investigate population health in low-and-middle-income countries, improve measurement approaches, analyze complex data, and contribute to scholarly output that supports better understanding of health risks, crisis impacts, and demographic change.
Key Responsibilities
* Conduct high-quality research on population health and its determinants in low-and-middle-income countries.
* Develop original research questions related to demography, epidemiology, public health, crises, disasters, epidemics, and social science measurement.
* Spend part of the appointment on independent research aligned with the candidate’s academic interests and long-term research agenda.
* Collaborate with Professor Stéphane Helleringer on research projects focused on population health measurement and the impact of health and humanitarian crises.
* Design empirical studies using appropriate demographic, epidemiological, statistical, and social science research methods.
* Collect, acquire, clean, organize, and manage research datasets for population health analysis.
* Apply advanced statistical models to examine determinants of health, mortality, morbidity, population change, crisis exposure, and public health outcomes.
* Use visualization techniques to communicate research findings clearly for academic and policy-focused audiences.
* Prepare peer-reviewed manuscripts for publication in high-quality academic journals.
* Develop or contribute to software packages, data tools, or reproducible research resources where relevant.
* Present research findings at international conferences, workshops, seminars, and academic meetings.
* Work within a large research community of postdoctoral fellows and faculty in the Division of Social Science.
* Maintain strong standards of research ethics, data quality, documentation, reproducibility, and scholarly integrity.
* Explore optional teaching opportunities where available and compensated, although teaching is not required for the role.
Ideal Profile
* PhD in demography, epidemiology, public health, or a related discipline in the social sciences.
* Candidates who have recently completed or will soon receive their PhD may be considered.
* Strong research background in population health, demographic methods, health measurement, epidemiology, public health, or social science data analysis.
* Experience studying low-and-middle-income countries is highly valuable.
* Prior involvement in data collection, field collaboration, or research partnerships in low-and-middle-income countries is preferred.
* Good knowledge of R or other software used for data management, statistical analysis, and data visualization.
* Ability to design empirical research studies and work with complex quantitative datasets.
* Strong academic writing skills with the ability to prepare manuscripts, research reports, and conference presentations.
* Interest in understanding the effects of crises, epidemics, disasters, and structural determinants on population health.
* Ability to work independently while contributing actively to collaborative academic research.
* Strong communication skills and readiness to engage with an interdisciplinary social science research community.
