Role Context
The Research Assistant Fellow - NMR Spectroscopy will support a research project focused on understanding the molecular structure and function of eumelanin using solid-state NMR spectroscopy and complementary analytical techniques. Working under the supervision of Dr. Brijith Thomas, the selected fellow will gain practical exposure to spectroscopy, biomaterials research, materials characterization, laboratory documentation, and scientific communication. The position is designed to help an early-career researcher build strong technical skills, contribute to individualized research projects, and prepare for future graduate study.
Key Responsibilities
* Assist in the preparation, handling, and characterization of eumelanin samples for spectroscopy and materials analysis.
* Support solid-state NMR spectroscopy experiments under supervision using Bruker 400-800 MHz equipment.
* Perform data acquisition, spectral processing, analysis, and documentation for research outputs.
* Learn and apply complementary analytical techniques relevant to biomaterials and materials characterization.
* Maintain organized laboratory records, experiment logs, sample details, analysis notes, and research files.
* Assist in preparing research reports, internal summaries, presentations, and manuscript-related materials.
* Participate in collaborative research discussions with multidisciplinary teams.
* Work on individualized research projects under supervisor mentorship during the fellowship.
* Support laboratory workflow, equipment care, safe handling practices, and research preparation tasks.
* Build practical research skills in spectroscopy, biomaterials, data interpretation, and scientific writing.
* Contribute to a collaborative academic environment focused on molecular structure, function, and material behavior.

Ideal Profile
* Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, or a closely related field.

* Familiarity with NMR spectroscopy is an advantage but not mandatory, as training will be provided.
* Interest in learning solid-state NMR methods, spectral processing, and laboratory research workflows.
