Role Context
The Research Associate - COF Water Treatment will support a research project focused on developing covalent organic frameworks for sustainable water treatment applications. The role combines chemistry, reaction engineering, materials science, and manufacturing principles to create advanced porous materials for environmental remediation. Working under the guidance of Dr. Safiya Khalil, the selected researcher will synthesize and characterize COF materials, evaluate their water treatment performance, support manuscript preparation, and contribute to individualized research projects within a cutting-edge academic research environment.
Key Responsibilities
* Conduct experimental research on covalent organic frameworks for water treatment and environmental remediation applications.
* Synthesize porous framework materials, including COFs and related MOF or COF systems.
* Characterize materials using powder X-ray diffraction, electron spectroscopy, porosity analysis, and related analytical methods.
* Evaluate the performance of developed materials in water treatment applications.
* Study structure-property-performance relationships in porous materials for sustainable water purification.
* Support research activities focused on controlling material structures from nanoscale to microscale.
* Assist in designing experiments that connect material architecture with adsorption, separation, or remediation performance.
* Maintain accurate laboratory records, sample details, experimental conditions, characterization results, and performance data.
* Prepare research summaries, technical notes, manuscripts, and literature review materials.
* Review scientific articles relevant to porous materials, COFs, MOFs, environmental chemistry, and water treatment.
* Work on individualized research projects under faculty supervision during the appointment.
* Collaborate with researchers in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, reaction engineering, and environmental remediation.
* Support safe laboratory practice, organized workflow, and responsible handling of chemicals, materials, and equipment.
* Contribute to a productive research environment focused on sustainable technologies and advanced materials innovation.
Ideal Profile
* BSc or MSc in Chemical Engineering, Material Science, Chemistry, or a closely related field.
* Research experience related to materials science is preferred.
* Experimental research experience in porous framework materials is required.
* Hands-on experience with synthesis and characterization of porous MOF or COF materials.
* Strong interest in environmental remediation, water treatment, sustainable materials, and advanced functional materials.
* Familiarity with powder X-ray diffraction, electron spectroscopy, porosity analysis, or related characterization techniques is valuable.
* Ability to work carefully with laboratory equipment, chemicals, data records, and experimental workflows.
* Strong analytical thinking and willingness to learn advanced materials research methods.
* Good communication skills for research discussions, manuscript support, and scientific documentation.
* Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a collaborative research team.
