Role Context
The Consultant Adult Critical Care Physician will take clinical responsibility for adults requiring intensive monitoring, organ support, emergency stabilization, and complex multidisciplinary treatment. The role combines rapid diagnostic decision-making, advanced airway and ventilator management, invasive hemodynamic monitoring, emergency response, and supervision of ICU teams. By coordinating closely with surgical, medical, anesthesia, emergency, and allied health services, the consultant will help improve survival, reduce complications, strengthen patient safety, and maintain consistently high standards of critical care delivery.
Key Responsibilities
* Assess and manage critically ill adult patients admitted to intensive care and high-dependency environments.
* Lead stabilization and treatment of patients with complex medical, surgical, postoperative, and emergency conditions.
* Perform advanced airway management including endotracheal intubation when clinically indicated.
* Insert central venous lines and other invasive access devices required for critical care management.
* Manage invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation using patient-specific respiratory strategies.
* Apply advanced hemodynamic monitoring to guide fluid resuscitation, vasoactive medication, and circulatory support.
* Diagnose and treat acute respiratory failure, shock, sepsis, multiorgan dysfunction, and other life-threatening conditions.
* Coordinate organ support for patients requiring cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, or neurological critical care interventions.
* Participate in rapid response, medical emergency, and resuscitation services throughout the hospital.
* Lead multidisciplinary ICU rounds and establish clear daily treatment priorities.
* Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, internists, cardiologists, pulmonologists, nephrologists, infectious disease specialists, and other consultants.
* Review laboratory results, imaging, microbiology findings, and physiological trends to support critical care decision-making.
* Monitor treatment response closely and modify management plans according to evolving clinical status.
* Identify early deterioration and initiate timely escalation of care.
* Supervise junior physicians, residents, fellows, nurses, and other ICU team members.
* Provide clear communication to patients and families regarding critical illness, treatment plans, prognosis, and major clinical decisions.
* Maintain complete and timely ICU documentation, procedure records, progress notes, and treatment plans.
* Ensure evidence-based clinical practice and adherence to patient safety, infection control, and critical care standards.
* Participate in morbidity and mortality reviews, clinical audits, quality improvement programs, and ICU governance activities.
* Contribute to continuing medical education, bedside teaching, departmental training, and professional development.
* Support development and review of critical care protocols, emergency pathways, and intensive care service standards.
Ideal Profile
* MBBS, MD, or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
* Specialist qualification in Critical Care Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine, or a closely related specialty.
* Board Certification, CCT, European Board, Facharzt, American Board, or another recognized equivalent qualification.
* Minimum 5 years of consultant-level critical care experience.
* Appropriate UAE consultant licensing or eligibility to obtain the required professional license.
* Strong experience managing high-acuity adult ICU patients within tertiary or internationally accredited hospitals.
* Advanced competence in mechanical ventilation, airway management, hemodynamic monitoring, and invasive critical care procedures.
* Proven ability to manage complex medical and surgical emergencies involving multiple organ systems.
