Role Context
The Consultant Cardiac Anesthesiologist will provide specialist anesthesia and perioperative care for patients undergoing complex cardiac, thoracic, vascular, and catheter-based cardiovascular procedures. The role combines detailed pre-operative assessment, advanced intraoperative monitoring, transesophageal echocardiography, critical event management, postoperative stabilization, and close collaboration with cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, perfusionists, and intensive care teams. The consultant will directly influence surgical safety, hemodynamic stability, procedural efficiency, and recovery outcomes across a high-acuity cardiothoracic service.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide comprehensive anesthesia care for adult and pediatric cardiac surgical procedures.
* Deliver anesthesia for coronary artery bypass grafting, valve repair and replacement, congenital heart surgery, aortic surgery, and heart transplantation.
* Support thoracic and major vascular procedures requiring advanced cardiovascular anesthesia expertise.
* Conduct detailed pre-anesthetic evaluations, including assessment of cardiac function, comorbidities, surgical risk, and perioperative optimization needs.
* Develop individualized anesthesia plans based on procedure complexity, hemodynamic status, cardiac physiology, and patient-specific risk factors.
* Provide anesthesia support for structural and interventional cardiology procedures including TAVI, TAVR, MitraClip, electrophysiology procedures, and cardiac catheterization.
* Perform and interpret intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography to support surgical decisions and real-time cardiovascular assessment.
* Use TEE findings to evaluate ventricular function, valve pathology, volume status, surgical results, and acute hemodynamic changes.
* Insert and manage arterial lines, central venous catheters, pulmonary artery catheters, and other invasive monitoring devices.
* Apply advanced cardiac output and hemodynamic monitoring to guide fluid therapy, vasoactive medication, and circulatory support.
* Manage cardiopulmonary bypass transitions in coordination with cardiac surgeons and perfusionists.
* Provide perioperative critical care for high-risk cardiac surgical patients in collaboration with intensivists and postoperative cardiac teams.
* Recognize and respond rapidly to cardiogenic shock, arrhythmias, cardiac arrest, severe bleeding, hemodynamic collapse, and other perioperative emergencies.
* Participate in advanced resuscitation and crisis management during complex cardiovascular procedures.
* Coordinate closely with cardiac surgeons, interventional cardiologists, electrophysiologists, intensivists, perfusionists, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals.
* Explain anesthesia techniques, perioperative risks, expected recovery, and postoperative pain management to patients and families.
* Maintain complete pre-operative assessments, anesthesia records, TEE documentation, procedural notes, and postoperative handovers.
* Supervise and mentor junior anesthesiologists, residents, fellows, and other clinical staff where appropriate.
* Participate in clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, quality improvement initiatives, and patient safety programs.
* Contribute to research, continuing medical education, departmental teaching, and development of cardiac anesthesia protocols.
* Maintain strict adherence to infection prevention, clinical governance, ethical practice, and evidence-based anesthesia standards.
Ideal Profile
* MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
* Completion of an accredited residency program in Anesthesiology.
* Fellowship or recognized advanced subspecialty training in Cardiac Anesthesia.
* Board Certification or equivalent recognized qualification in Anesthesiology.
* Certification in Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography is highly preferred.
* Valid DHA License, DHA Eligibility Letter, or eligibility for Consultant licensure in Dubai.
* Minimum 8-10 years of post-specialization experience in cardiac anesthesia.
* Extensive experience providing anesthesia for adult cardiac surgery.
* Strong experience with pediatric cardiac procedures and congenital heart disease is highly desirable.
