Role Context
The Consultant Cardiac
Key Responsibilities
* Provide specialized anesthesia services for cardiac, thoracic, and major vascular surgical procedures involving adult and pediatric patients.
* Conduct detailed pre-anesthetic evaluations, including clinical risk assessment, medical optimization, airway review, cardiovascular status assessment, and anesthesia planning.
* Administer general anesthesia for complex cardiac surgeries such as coronary artery bypass grafting, valve repair or replacement, congenital heart procedures, heart transplantation, and aortic surgery.
* Deliver anesthesia support for interventional cardiology and structural heart procedures, including TAVI, TAVR, MitraClip, electrophysiology procedures, and cardiac catheterization.
* Perform and interpret intraoperative Transesophageal Echocardiography to support surgical decision-making, monitor cardiac function, and guide perioperative management.
* Manage advanced invasive hemodynamic monitoring, including arterial lines, central venous catheters, pulmonary artery catheters, cardiac output monitoring, and vasoactive therapy adjustments.
* Provide perioperative critical care support for cardiac surgical patients in coordination with intensivists, cardiac surgeons, anesthesiology teams, and ICU staff.
* Respond quickly to cardiac emergencies, cardiogenic shock, resuscitation events, severe arrhythmias, bleeding complications, and perioperative instability.
* Coordinate closely with cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, perfusionists, intensivists, nurses, technicians, and multidisciplinary healthcare professionals to maintain safe patient flow.
* Counsel patients and families on anesthesia plans, expected risks, monitoring needs, post-operative recovery, and critical care requirements.
* Maintain accurate anesthesia records, pre-operative notes, intraoperative monitoring documentation, TEE findings, medication records, consent details, and post-operative handover notes in line with DHA regulations and hospital policies.
* Participate in morbidity and mortality reviews, clinical audits, quality improvement projects, research activity, departmental education, and continuing medical education programs.
* Mentor junior anesthesiologists, residents, operating room staff, and allied healthcare professionals where required.
* Ensure strict adherence to patient safety standards, infection control protocols, medication safety, ethical medical practice, and evidence-based anesthesia guidelines.
Ideal Profile
* Medical Degree such as MBBS or equivalent from a recognized institution.
* Completion of a recognized Residency in Anesthesiology.
* Fellowship or advanced subspecialty training in Cardiac Anesthesia from a recognized institution.
* Board Certification or equivalent qualification in Anesthesiology.
* Certification in Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography is highly preferred.
* DHA Eligibility Letter, valid DHA License, or eligibility for Consultant licensure in Dubai.
* Minimum 8-10 years of post-specialization experience in Cardiac Anesthesia.
* Extensive experience providing anesthesia for adult and pediatric cardiac surgeries, thoracic procedures, vascular surgery, and interventional cardiac procedures.
* Strong background in tertiary care hospitals with established cardiothoracic surgery programs is highly preferred.
* Advanced knowledge of cardiac physiology, cardiopulmonary bypass, vasoactive medication management, coagulation issues, and perioperative critical care.
* Proven ability to interpret intraoperative TEE findings and apply them to clinical decision-making.
* Strong crisis management, communication, leadership, and multidisciplinary collaboration skills.
* High standards of professionalism, ethical conduct, patient-centered care, clinical governance, documentation, and time management.
