Role Context
The Consultant - Cardiac Transplant Medicine will provide expert medical care for patients with advanced heart failure and heart transplantation needs. The role requires strong clinical judgment in transplant candidacy assessment, listing evaluation, immunosuppression planning, rejection monitoring, infection prevention, graft surveillance, and long-term follow-up. Working closely with cardiac surgeons, intensivists, anesthesiologists, transplant coordinators, and multidisciplinary cardiac teams, the consultant will support safe, evidence-based transplant pathways and high-quality cardiac care in Dubai.
Key Responsibilities
* Evaluate and manage patients with advanced heart failure requiring cardiac transplantation assessment, specialized medical therapy, or mechanical circulatory support consideration.
* Conduct pre-transplant assessments, transplant listing evaluations, risk reviews, suitability assessments, and multidisciplinary case planning.
* Provide peri-operative medical input for cardiac transplant patients in collaboration with cardiac surgery, ICU, anesthesia, and transplant coordination teams.
* Manage post-transplant follow-up care, including immunosuppression protocols, rejection surveillance, infection prevention, graft function monitoring, and long-term complication management.
* Assess suitability for mechanical circulatory support, including LVAD, ECMO, and related advanced heart failure support options.
* Interpret clinical findings, cardiac imaging, hemodynamic data, laboratory results, biopsy findings, and transplant monitoring reports to guide treatment decisions.
* Collaborate with cardiac surgeons, heart failure specialists, intensivists, anesthesiologists, pharmacists, transplant coordinators, nurses, rehabilitation teams, and allied healthcare professionals.
* Participate in transplant selection committees, multidisciplinary case conferences, patient safety discussions, and complex cardiac care reviews.
* Support quality improvement initiatives, clinical governance, protocol development, transplant pathway optimization, and outcome monitoring.
* Provide clear counselling to patients and families regarding transplant eligibility, risks, treatment options, immunosuppression, follow-up requirements, and long-term care.
* Contribute to teaching, research, academic activity, departmental training, and mentoring of junior doctors and clinical staff.
* Maintain accurate clinical documentation, transplant evaluation notes, treatment plans, medication records, follow-up reports, and multidisciplinary recommendations.
Ideal Profile
* MBBS, MD, or equivalent medical qualification from a recognized institution.
* Board certification in Cardiology or Internal Medicine.
* Subspecialty training in Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation.
* Fellowship from a recognized international cardiac transplant center.
* Minimum 3-5 years of post-fellowship experience in cardiac transplant medicine.
* Strong knowledge of international transplant guidelines, including ISHLT and ACC/AHA standards.
* Proven expertise in advanced heart failure management, transplant evaluation, immunosuppression management, rejection surveillance, and long-term graft monitoring.
* Experience with mechanical circulatory support assessment, including LVAD and ECMO, will be highly valuable.
* Strong clinical decision-making, communication, documentation, and multidisciplinary teamwork skills.
* Ability to work effectively in a high-acuity tertiary cardiac care environment.
