Role Context
The Consultant - Critical Care Medicine will provide comprehensive care for critically ill patients admitted to intensive care settings. The role requires strong procedural competence, rapid clinical judgment, advanced life support capability, and close coordination with emergency medicine, surgery, anesthesia, pulmonology, cardiology, nursing, and allied health teams. The consultant will help improve ICU outcomes, patient safety, infection control standards, and clinical governance within a leading healthcare facility in Dubai.
Key Responsibilities
* Assess, diagnose, stabilize, and manage critically ill patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.
* Provide advanced life support and critical care management for respiratory failure, sepsis, trauma, cardiac emergencies, shock, and multi-organ dysfunction.
* Perform critical care procedures including intubation, central venous catheter insertion, arterial line placement, bronchoscopy, ventilator management, and bedside ultrasound where applicable.
* Lead multidisciplinary ICU rounds and coordinate comprehensive patient management plans for complex medical and surgical cases.
* Manage invasive and non-invasive ventilation, sedation plans, hemodynamic support, vasopressor therapy, fluid balance, and organ support strategies.
* Collaborate with emergency medicine, surgery, anesthesia, pulmonology, cardiology, infectious diseases, nephrology, nursing, and other specialty teams.
* Supervise junior physicians, residents, ICU staff, and clinical team members during assessment, procedures, documentation, and patient handover.
* Participate in rapid response teams, code blue management, emergency escalation, and hospital preparedness initiatives.
* Maintain accurate medical documentation, progress notes, procedure records, treatment plans, and discharge or transfer summaries.
* Ensure compliance with UAE healthcare regulations, hospital protocols, infection control policies, ICU standards, and patient safety requirements.
* Participate in clinical audits, morbidity reviews, research, quality improvement programs, and continuing medical education activities.
* Support ICU clinical governance by improving protocols, reviewing outcomes, and strengthening safe care pathways.
* Maintain high standards of communication with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams during critical illness and complex decision-making.
Ideal Profile
* MBBS or equivalent medical degree recognized by UAE healthcare authorities.
* Board certification or fellowship in Critical Care Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, or Anesthesia Critical Care.
* Valid UAE Consultant License or eligibility in Critical Care Medicine.
* Minimum 5-7 years of post-board consultant experience in ICU or Critical Care Medicine within a tertiary care or academic hospital.
* Strong expertise in ventilator management, sepsis care, advanced life support, and critical care procedures.
* Certification in ACLS and other advanced critical care certifications is preferred.
* Experience in multidisciplinary and high-acuity ICUs is highly desirable.
* Exposure to ECMO, CRRT, bronchoscopy, bedside ultrasound, and advanced hemodynamic monitoring will be an advantage.
* Academic, teaching, audit, clinical governance, or research experience is preferred.
* Excellent leadership, communication, clinical judgment, documentation, and decision-making skills.
* Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, multicultural healthcare environment.
