Role Context
The Consultant - Critical Care Medicine will provide expert clinical leadership in the Intensive Care Unit, where timely decisions, advanced monitoring, and coordinated care directly affect patient survival and recovery. The role involves managing critically ill patients with sepsis, respiratory failure, shock, multi-organ dysfunction, post-operative complications, and complex medical emergencies. By guiding ICU teams, supervising junior doctors, and applying evidence-based critical care practice, the consultant helps improve patient outcomes, strengthen ICU performance, and support safe high-acuity care in Dubai.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide comprehensive care for critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit, including diagnosis, treatment planning, stabilization, monitoring, and ongoing management.
* Lead daily ICU rounds and make senior clinical decisions for patients requiring advanced organ support, ventilator care, hemodynamic management, or emergency intervention.
* Develop individualized treatment plans in collaboration with intensivists, specialists, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and allied healthcare professionals.
* Manage complex medical emergencies including sepsis, septic shock, respiratory failure, cardiac instability, renal failure, neurological deterioration, and multi-organ dysfunction.
* Oversee ventilator management, airway support coordination, oxygenation strategies, sedation protocols, weaning plans, and critical care procedures.
* Participate in on-call duties, urgent consultations, emergency admissions, and rapid response support when required.
* Review laboratory results, imaging findings, invasive monitoring data, clinical progression, and response to treatment to adjust ICU care plans.
* Supervise junior physicians, residents, nurses, and allied healthcare staff during ICU care delivery and emergency situations.
* Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation, including ICU progress notes, procedure records, treatment plans, consent documentation, and discharge or transfer summaries.
* Communicate clearly with patients’ families regarding clinical status, prognosis, treatment goals, escalation decisions, and care expectations.
* Ensure clinical practice follows hospital protocols, infection control standards, ICU safety policies, ethical guidelines, and applicable UAE healthcare regulations.
* Participate in morbidity and mortality reviews, clinical audits, ICU performance improvement, patient-safety initiatives, and quality governance activities.
* Stay updated with advancements in critical care medicine, mechanical ventilation, sepsis care, organ support, and evidence-based ICU practice.
* Mentor junior doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals through bedside teaching, case discussions, simulation learning, and continuing medical education.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MBBS, MD, or equivalent from a recognized medical institution.
* Board certification in Critical Care Medicine or an equivalent recognized specialist qualification.
* Minimum 5 years of consultant-level ICU experience in a reputable healthcare facility.
* Western-trained candidates are preferred.
* Strong expertise in critical care procedures, ventilator management, hemodynamic support, emergency response, and complex ICU decision-making.
* Proven ability to manage critically ill patients with sepsis, respiratory failure, shock, organ failure, trauma-related complications, and high-acuity medical conditions.
* Experience working in a modern ICU environment with advanced monitoring systems and multidisciplinary care pathways.
* Excellent leadership, communication, teamwork, and clinical decision-making skills.
* Ability to perform effectively in high-pressure clinical situations requiring rapid judgment and calm coordination.
* Fluency in English is mandatory, while Arabic language skills are an advantage.
