Role Context
The Consultant Critical Care Physician will take clinical responsibility for critically ill adult patients requiring continuous monitoring, organ support, invasive procedures, and rapid therapeutic decision-making. The role spans medical, surgical, trauma, and sepsis-related intensive care while also supporting code blue, rapid response, and emergency preparedness activities. Through close coordination with emergency medicine, anesthesiology, surgery, pulmonology, cardiology, nursing, and other specialist teams, the consultant will help improve survival, reduce complications, and maintain consistently high ICU standards.
Key Responsibilities
* Assess, diagnose, and manage critically ill adult patients admitted to intensive care.
* Lead treatment of complex medical and surgical conditions requiring high-acuity monitoring and organ support.
* Manage patients with sepsis and septic shock using evidence-based resuscitation and antimicrobial strategies.
* Provide advanced life support for trauma, respiratory failure, circulatory collapse, and other critical emergencies.
* Perform endotracheal intubation and advanced airway management when clinically required.
* Insert central venous catheters for vasoactive therapy, hemodynamic monitoring, and critical care access.
* Perform arterial line placement for continuous blood pressure monitoring and repeated blood gas assessment.
* Conduct bronchoscopy where clinically indicated for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes.
* Manage invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation and adjust respiratory support according to evolving clinical needs.
* Apply advanced hemodynamic monitoring to guide fluid management, vasoactive medication, and cardiovascular support.
* Lead daily multidisciplinary ICU rounds and establish clear treatment priorities for each patient.
* Review laboratory trends, imaging, microbiology findings, blood gases, and physiological data when adjusting management plans.
* Collaborate with emergency physicians, anesthesiologists, surgeons, pulmonologists, cardiologists, nephrologists, infectious disease specialists, and other consultants.
* Participate in rapid response teams and support early stabilization of deteriorating patients outside the ICU.
* Lead or support code blue events and advanced resuscitation efforts throughout the hospital.
* Contribute to emergency preparedness, escalation pathways, and critical care response planning.
* Provide consultant supervision to residents, junior physicians, and ICU staff.
* Monitor for complications including ventilator-associated infection, delirium, thrombosis, organ dysfunction, and treatment-related adverse events.
* Maintain accurate ICU progress notes, procedural documentation, treatment plans, and clinical handovers.
* Ensure compliance with infection prevention, ICU safety protocols, and hospital governance standards.
* Participate in clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, quality improvement projects, and outcome monitoring.
* Contribute to research, teaching, continuing medical education, and development of critical care protocols.
* Support adoption of evidence-based technologies and advanced critical care practices where appropriate.
Ideal Profile
* MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
* Board Certification or Fellowship in Critical Care Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine, Anesthesia Critical Care, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, or an equivalent recognized specialty.
* Appropriate UAE Consultant License or eligibility to obtain the required professional license.
* Minimum 5-7 years of post-board consultant experience in ICU or Critical Care Medicine.
* Experience within a tertiary-care or high-acuity hospital environment is strongly preferred.
* Strong expertise in mechanical ventilation and complex respiratory support.
* Demonstrated experience managing severe sepsis, shock, multiorgan dysfunction, and critically ill surgical patients.
* Proven competence in intubation, central venous catheterization, arterial line placement, and other advanced ICU procedures.
* ACLS certification and relevant advanced critical care credentials are preferred.
* Exposure to ECMO is advantageous.
* Experience with critical care ultrasound and bedside echocardiographic assessment is desirable.
* Familiarity with advanced hemodynamic monitoring technologies is highly beneficial.
* Strong clinical judgment with the ability to make rapid decisions in unstable patients.
