Role Context
The Consultant Critical Care Physician will provide advanced diagnosis, treatment, stabilization, and ongoing management for critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit. The role is vital for improving survival, reducing complications, supporting organ function, and ensuring coordinated care for patients with life-threatening medical and surgical conditions. Working within a state-of-the-art ICU environment, the consultant will collaborate with specialists, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and allied healthcare professionals while guiding junior staff and strengthening critical care standards.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide comprehensive care for critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, stabilization, and ongoing management.
* Develop individualized treatment plans in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams based on patient condition, organ support needs, clinical risks, and expected recovery pathway.
* Manage complex medical emergencies, ventilator support, sepsis, septic shock, respiratory failure, circulatory instability, multi-organ failure, and high-acuity ICU cases.
* Perform and supervise critical care procedures within approved clinical privileges, including airway support, central line placement, arterial line placement, invasive monitoring, and emergency stabilization.
* Conduct daily ICU rounds, review investigations, monitor treatment response, adjust medication plans, and coordinate escalation or de-escalation of care.
* Participate in on-call duties and provide emergency consultations for critically ill patients requiring urgent ICU assessment or admission.
* Collaborate with emergency medicine, internal medicine, surgery, anesthesiology, pulmonology, cardiology, nephrology, nursing, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, and allied healthcare teams.
* Supervise junior physicians, residents, nurses, and medical staff during patient care, clinical procedures, ICU rounds, and emergency response.
* Maintain accurate and timely medical records, ICU progress notes, procedure documentation, ventilator records, medication plans, handover notes, and discharge summaries.
* Stay updated with advancements in critical care medicine, ICU technologies, ventilation strategies, sepsis protocols, and evidence-based intensive care practice.
* Participate in CME programs, clinical training activities, audits, morbidity reviews, quality improvement initiatives, and patient safety programs.
* Support a calm, organized, and high-performing ICU environment focused on ethical practice, infection control, clinical governance, and excellent patient outcomes.
Ideal Profile
* Medical Degree such as MBBS, MD, or equivalent from a recognized institution.
* Board Certification in Critical Care Medicine or an equivalent recognized qualification.
* Eligibility for Saudi Commission for Health Specialties licensing.
* Minimum 5 years of consultant-level ICU experience in a reputable healthcare facility.
* Western-trained candidates are preferred.
* Strong expertise in critical care procedures, ventilator management, emergency response, sepsis care, organ failure management, and high-acuity ICU decision-making.
* Experience working in modern ICU facilities, tertiary hospitals, or advanced critical care units will be highly valued.
* Excellent leadership, communication, clinical judgment, and decision-making skills.
* Ability to work effectively in a high-pressure clinical environment with complex and unstable patients.
* Strong mentoring ability for junior doctors, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals.
* Fluency in English is mandatory, while Arabic language skills will be an advantage.
