Role Context
The Consultant - Emergency Medicine HOD will lead the emergency department as both a senior clinician and strategic department head. The role carries responsibility for safe emergency care, operational readiness, clinical governance, staffing performance, patient flow, quality outcomes, and readiness for critical incidents.
This position has a major impact on hospital performance and patient safety because emergency medicine is often the first point of care for urgent, trauma, medical, surgical, pediatric, and life-threatening presentations. The consultant will work closely with hospital leadership, nursing management, intensive care, anesthesia, surgery, cardiology, pediatrics, radiology, and other specialties to ensure emergency pathways are fast, coordinated, and clinically effective.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead and manage the Emergency Medicine Department, ensuring strong clinical standards, efficient operations, safe patient flow, and responsive emergency care services.
* Provide expert diagnosis, stabilization, and treatment for acute medical, surgical, trauma, cardiac, pediatric, and critical emergency cases.
* Supervise and perform advanced emergency procedures, including airway management, trauma resuscitation, cardiac life support, critical care stabilization, and emergency procedural interventions.
* Develop, implement, and monitor departmental policies, clinical protocols, escalation pathways, triage standards, and evidence-based emergency care practices.
* Oversee medical and nursing team coordination, staffing plans, duty schedules, performance standards, and departmental resource use.
* Mentor and support junior doctors, residents, emergency nurses, allied health professionals, and multidisciplinary staff working in high-pressure emergency settings.
* Collaborate with hospital leadership to improve emergency department performance, waiting times, admission pathways, discharge planning, and interdepartmental coordination.
* Lead morbidity and mortality reviews, clinical audits, quality improvement projects, risk reviews, patient safety initiatives, and CME activities.
* Represent the Emergency Medicine Department in hospital committees, governance meetings, emergency preparedness forums, and external professional platforms.
* Ensure readiness for mass casualty response, trauma activation, cardiac emergencies, sepsis pathways, stroke alerts, and other time-sensitive emergency protocols.
* Maintain accurate clinical documentation, incident reporting, departmental records, and regulatory compliance standards.
* Promote a culture of calm decision-making, accountability, teamwork, patient respect, and continuous clinical improvement.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree with recognized specialization in Emergency Medicine.
* Board certification, fellowship, or equivalent qualification in Emergency Medicine.
* Minimum 10-15 years of post-specialization experience in emergency medicine.
* Proven Head of Department, department chair, medical director, or senior emergency leadership experience.
* Active DHA license or DHA consultant license eligibility is preferred.
* Strong expertise in trauma care, resuscitation, airway management, cardiac emergencies, acute medical emergencies, critical stabilization, and emergency department operations.
* Demonstrated ability to manage clinical teams, improve departmental performance, and lead under pressure in high-volume emergency environments.
* Excellent communication skills for patient care, family discussions, staff leadership, executive reporting, and multidisciplinary coordination.
* Fluency in English is required, while Arabic or additional languages are an advantage.
