Role Context
The Consultant - Emergency Medicine HOD will lead the Emergency Medicine Department while providing high-level clinical care for acute medical, surgical, trauma, cardiac, pediatric, and critical emergency presentations. The role carries responsibility for departmental standards, clinical governance, staffing, workflow efficiency, policy development, and multidisciplinary coordination. The consultant will help strengthen emergency care pathways in Dubai by ensuring rapid assessment, safe stabilization, timely escalation, and consistent delivery of evidence-based patient care.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead and manage the Emergency Medicine Department, ensuring safe clinical practice, efficient patient flow, and strong operational performance.
* Provide expert diagnosis, treatment, stabilization, and escalation for acute medical and surgical emergencies across all age groups.
* Manage trauma cases, cardiac emergencies, airway emergencies, sepsis, shock, critical illness, resuscitation cases, and high-acuity emergency presentations.
* Supervise and perform advanced emergency procedures, including airway management, trauma resuscitation, cardiac life support, procedural sedation, and critical care stabilization.
* Develop, review, and implement departmental policies, emergency protocols, clinical pathways, triage standards, and evidence-based practice guidelines.
* Oversee medical staffing, duty rosters, scheduling, supervision, performance management, and workforce planning within the emergency department.
* Mentor junior doctors, residents, emergency physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals through structured guidance, clinical teaching, and case-based learning.
* Work with hospital leadership, intensive care, surgery, cardiology, pediatrics, radiology, anesthesia, nursing, and ambulance teams to improve emergency care coordination.
* Monitor departmental quality indicators, patient safety outcomes, waiting times, escalation processes, incident reports, and service efficiency.
* Lead clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, CME programs, simulation training, and quality improvement initiatives.
* Represent the Emergency Medicine Department in hospital committees, accreditation activities, emergency preparedness planning, and external professional forums.
* Promote a culture of accountability, rapid decision-making, respectful communication, ethical practice, and continuous service improvement.
* Maintain accurate clinical documentation, leadership records, protocol updates, audit reports, and compliance documentation in line with DHA and hospital standards.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree with recognized specialization in Emergency Medicine.
* Board certification or equivalent specialist qualification in Emergency Medicine.
* Eligibility for Dubai Health Authority Consultant licensure.
* Minimum 10-15 years of post-specialization experience in emergency medicine.
* Proven Head of Department, department chair, medical director, or senior emergency medicine leadership experience.
* Strong clinical expertise in trauma care, resuscitation, airway management, cardiac emergencies, critical care stabilization, and high-acuity emergency procedures.
* Demonstrated ability to manage emergency department operations, staffing models, patient flow, departmental protocols, quality metrics, and multidisciplinary service delivery.
* Strong leadership, decision-making, organizational, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
* Experience mentoring physicians, residents, nurses, and allied healthcare teams in a fast-paced emergency setting.
* Fluency in English is required, while Arabic or additional languages are an advantage.
