Role Context
The Consultant Emergency Medicine will provide expert clinical care for patients presenting with acute illness, trauma, critical deterioration, and time-sensitive medical emergencies. The role is vital for rapid assessment, stabilization, early diagnosis, safe escalation, and coordinated emergency department workflow. Working with nurses, junior doctors, intensivists, surgeons, internal medicine physicians, radiology, laboratory teams, and hospital leadership, the consultant will help improve emergency response quality, patient safety, clinical documentation, and multidisciplinary care delivery in a busy Saudi healthcare setting.
Key Responsibilities
* Conduct initial assessments, examinations, and diagnoses for patients presenting to the emergency department with acute medical, surgical, traumatic, or critical conditions.
* Stabilize patients with life-threatening presentations through rapid clinical decision-making, airway support coordination, resuscitation, medication management, and emergency interventions.
* Implement timely and effective treatment plans to prevent deterioration and support safe transfer, admission, discharge, or specialist referral.
* Manage a wide range of emergency cases including cardiac emergencies, respiratory distress, trauma, sepsis, stroke-like presentations, abdominal emergencies, allergic reactions, and acute pain conditions.
* Coordinate care with multidisciplinary teams to ensure patients receive comprehensive and appropriate emergency treatment.
* Communicate clearly with patients, families, and clinical teams regarding diagnosis, treatment options, emergency risks, and follow-up needs.
* Oversee and supervise junior medical staff, providing guidance, clinical teaching, mentoring, and support during emergency department workflows.
* Maintain accurate and timely documentation of assessments, procedures, treatment decisions, prescriptions, referrals, discharge plans, and clinical handovers.
* Participate in quality improvement initiatives, clinical audits, morbidity reviews, emergency department meetings, and continuous professional development activities.
* Support compliance with hospital policies, Saudi healthcare standards, patient safety requirements, infection control procedures, and ethical medical practice.
* Contribute to emergency care service development by identifying workflow improvements, protocol gaps, training needs, and patient safety opportunities.
* Maintain readiness for high-acuity emergencies while supporting a calm, organized, and collaborative emergency department environment.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree from an accredited institution.
* Board Certification in Emergency Medicine from a recognized authority.
* UK CCT, American Board, Canadian Board, or equivalent certification is required.
* Eligibility for Saudi Commission for Health Specialties licensing.
* Minimum 5 years of post-graduate experience in Emergency Medicine.
* Previous experience working in the Middle East is highly desirable.
* Strong experience diagnosing and treating acute, urgent, and life-threatening emergency presentations.
* Excellent clinical judgment in resuscitation, stabilization, triage support, emergency procedures, and multidisciplinary escalation.
* Strong communication, interpersonal, leadership, and mentoring skills.
* Fluent English communication skills are required, while Arabic proficiency will be an advantage.
* Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced emergency department with multicultural patients and clinical teams.
