Role Context
The Consultant Fetal Medicine specialist will lead the assessment and management of pregnancies complicated by fetal abnormalities, maternal medical conditions, growth concerns, genetic risks, and other high-risk factors. The position combines advanced ultrasound diagnostics, fetal echocardiography, invasive prenatal testing, clinical counseling, and selected fetal therapeutic procedures. Through close coordination with obstetrics, neonatology, genetics, pediatric surgery, and radiology teams, the consultant will help improve early diagnosis, treatment planning, parental understanding, and outcomes for both mother and baby.
Key Responsibilities
* Evaluate and manage high-risk pregnancies involving suspected or confirmed fetal abnormalities.
* Perform detailed fetal anomaly scans using advanced obstetric ultrasound techniques.
* Conduct fetal echocardiography to assess structural and functional cardiac conditions before birth.
* Monitor fetal growth, placental function, amniotic fluid levels, and fetal wellbeing throughout pregnancy.
* Review maternal medical history, obstetric background, previous pregnancy outcomes, and relevant diagnostic findings when developing individualized care plans.
* Counsel expectant parents regarding fetal diagnoses, prognosis, available treatment pathways, pregnancy management, and anticipated neonatal needs.
* Perform or supervise invasive prenatal diagnostic procedures including amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling.
* Undertake fetal blood transfusions, fetoscopic procedures, and appropriate intrauterine interventions when clinically indicated.
* Coordinate complex fetal cases with obstetricians, neonatologists, geneticists, pediatric surgeons, radiologists, anesthesiologists, and other specialists.
* Support multidisciplinary case conferences for pregnancies requiring coordinated delivery and neonatal treatment planning.
* Maintain complete and timely clinical records, imaging reports, procedural documentation, consent records, and follow-up plans.
* Contribute to clinical governance through departmental audits, case reviews, patient safety initiatives, and quality improvement activity.
* Participate in teaching, specialist training, research, and evidence-based development of fetal medicine services.
* Remain current with advances in prenatal diagnosis, fetal imaging, fetal therapy, maternal-fetal medicine, and related clinical guidelines.
Ideal Profile
* MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
* Completed specialty training in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
* Fellowship, certification, or advanced recognized training in Fetal Medicine.
* Minimum 5 years of consultant-level fetal medicine experience within a reputable tertiary care hospital.
* Western education or professional experience within the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or an equivalent recognized healthcare system.
* Valid DHA, DOH, or MOH Consultant license, or eligibility to obtain the appropriate UAE consultant license.
* Advanced competence in detailed fetal anomaly scanning and high-risk pregnancy assessment.
* Strong experience in fetal echocardiography, prenatal diagnosis, and invasive fetal procedures.
* Clinical capability in fetal therapeutic interventions is highly desirable.
* Excellent communication and counseling skills for discussing complex and sensitive fetal diagnoses with families.

* Fluency in English is required, while Arabic language ability is an advantage.
