Role Context
The Consultant Fetal Medicine will provide expert diagnostic, counselling, and procedural care for patients with high-risk pregnancies and complex fetal conditions. The role is clinically important because early detection, precise fetal imaging, genetic evaluation, multidisciplinary planning, and timely prenatal intervention can significantly influence pregnancy management and neonatal outcomes. Working within a specialist maternity and fetal medicine setting, the consultant will help strengthen advanced prenatal services, family counselling, clinical governance, academic activity, and evidence-based care pathways.
Key Responsibilities
* Deliver comprehensive fetal medicine services for high-risk pregnancies and complex fetal conditions.
* Perform detailed fetal assessments including anomaly scans, fetal echocardiography, Doppler studies, growth evaluation, placental assessment, and advanced ultrasound review.
* Conduct prenatal diagnostic evaluations and coordinate genetic testing where clinically indicated.
* Collaborate with maternal-fetal medicine specialists, obstetricians, neonatologists, geneticists, pediatric subspecialists, radiologists, midwives, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals.
* Develop individualized management plans for pregnancies involving fetal anomalies, growth restriction, multiple gestation concerns, genetic conditions, placental complications, or maternal-fetal risk factors.
* Perform prenatal interventions such as fetal blood sampling, intrauterine transfusion, fetal shunt placement, and other indicated fetal procedures within approved clinical privileges.
* Provide clear and compassionate counselling to patients and families regarding fetal diagnosis, prognosis, treatment choices, monitoring plans, procedural risks, and expected outcomes.
* Support coordinated care for cases requiring neonatal planning, delivery timing decisions, surgical consultation, or postnatal specialist follow-up.
* Maintain accurate and detailed clinical documentation, scan reports, counselling notes, consent records, procedural reports, multidisciplinary recommendations, and follow-up plans.
* Ensure effective communication with patients, families, referring physicians, and multidisciplinary teams throughout the care pathway.
* Stay current with advancements in fetal medicine, prenatal diagnostics, fetal therapy, maternal-fetal imaging, and international clinical guidelines.
* Contribute to departmental research, publications, academic activities, case reviews, and evidence-based practice initiatives.
* Participate in quality improvement projects, clinical governance meetings, departmental discussions, audits, and patient safety activities.
* Support training and mentorship of junior doctors, sonographers, residents, fellows, nurses, and allied health staff involved in fetal medicine services.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MBBS, MD, or equivalent from an accredited institution.
* Board Certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
* Specialist qualification in Fetal Medicine from a recognized training program.
* Minimum 5 years of post-qualification experience in fetal medicine.
* Previous experience in a tertiary hospital, specialized fetal medicine unit, advanced maternity center, or maternal-fetal medicine program is preferred.
* Proven expertise in advanced fetal imaging, prenatal diagnostics, anomaly scanning, fetal echocardiography, Doppler studies, and fetal intervention.
* Strong ability to manage high-risk pregnancies and complex fetal conditions through multidisciplinary planning.
* Experience performing fetal blood sampling, intrauterine transfusion, fetal shunt placement, or related fetal procedures will be highly valued.
* Strong communication, counselling, interpersonal, and family-support skills.
* Ability to explain sensitive fetal diagnoses with empathy, clarity, cultural awareness, and professional discretion.
* Fluency in English is required, while Arabic language skills will be an advantage.
