The Consultant - Fetal Medicine will lead advanced clinical care for pregnancies requiring detailed fetal evaluation, early diagnosis, careful counselling, and coordinated treatment planning. The role has direct impact on maternal and fetal outcomes by identifying abnormalities, guiding clinical decisions, performing prenatal interventions, and supporting families through complex and sensitive medical situations. Key Responsibilities
* Deliver comprehensive fetal medicine services for high-risk pregnancies, suspected fetal abnormalities, complex maternal-fetal cases, and referred prenatal conditions.
* Perform advanced fetal assessments including anomaly scans, fetal echocardiography, Doppler studies, growth evaluation, placental assessment, and fetal wellbeing monitoring.
* Interpret prenatal diagnostic findings and provide expert recommendations based on clinical history, imaging results, genetic testing, and fetal condition.
* Collaborate with obstetricians, maternal-fetal medicine specialists, neonatologists, geneticists, radiologists, sonographers, nurses, and allied healthcare teams.
* Develop individualized management plans for complex fetal conditions, multiple pregnancies, fetal growth restriction, congenital anomalies, and other high-risk pregnancy cases.
* Perform indicated prenatal interventions such as fetal blood sampling, intrauterine transfusion, fetal shunt placement, and other specialist fetal procedures.
* Provide clear and compassionate counselling to patients and families regarding diagnosis, prognosis, treatment options, expected outcomes, and follow-up plans.
* Communicate complex fetal medicine findings in a sensitive, culturally aware, and clinically accurate manner.
* Maintain accurate clinical documentation, imaging reports, procedure notes, consent records, counselling summaries, and multidisciplinary care plans.
* Ensure effective coordination between fetal medicine, obstetrics, neonatology, genetics, surgery, and other subspecialty services.
* Stay updated with advances in fetal medicine, prenatal diagnostics, fetal therapy, imaging standards, and evidence-based pregnancy care.
* Contribute to departmental research, academic activities, clinical publications, case reviews, and continuing medical education.
* Participate in quality-improvement initiatives, clinical governance meetings, audit activities, and patient-safety reviews.
* Support the training and mentorship of junior doctors, sonographers, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals involved in fetal medicine care.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MBBS, MD, or equivalent from an accredited medical institution.
* Board certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
* Specialist qualification or recognized advanced training in Fetal Medicine.
* Minimum 5 years of post-qualification experience in fetal medicine, preferably within a tertiary hospital or specialized fetal medicine unit.
* Proven expertise in advanced fetal imaging, prenatal diagnostics, fetal echocardiography, Doppler studies, genetic testing coordination, and fetal interventions.
* Strong clinical judgment in managing high-risk pregnancies, fetal anomalies, complex prenatal findings, and multidisciplinary treatment pathways.
* Experience performing fetal procedures such as fetal blood sampling, intrauterine transfusion, and fetal shunt placement where clinically indicated.
* Excellent communication, counselling, empathy, and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to explain sensitive diagnoses and treatment options clearly to patients and families.
* Fluency in English is required, while Arabic language skills are an advantage.
* Ability to work effectively with obstetricians, neonatologists, geneticists, sonographers, nurses, and allied healthcare teams.
