Role Context
The Consultant Gastroenterologist - Endoscopy will provide expert assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care for patients with gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary conditions. This role is important in a modern tertiary healthcare setting because digestive system disorders often require accurate clinical evaluation, endoscopic expertise, coordinated specialist input, and evidence-based long-term management. Working in Saudi Arabia, the consultant will support advanced gastroenterology services, improve diagnostic accuracy, contribute to patient safety, and help strengthen clinical standards across inpatient and outpatient care pathways.
Key Responsibilities
* Conduct comprehensive assessments for patients with gastrointestinal symptoms, hepatobiliary concerns, digestive disorders, inflammatory conditions, bleeding, abdominal pain, reflux, bowel habit changes, and complex referral cases.
* Provide inpatient and outpatient gastroenterology consultations, including diagnosis, treatment planning, follow-up reviews, and specialist second opinions.
* Perform diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures including upper GI endoscopy, colonoscopy, polypectomy, and ERCP where applicable and within approved privileges.
* Interpret imaging reports, laboratory results, endoscopic findings, pathology results, liver function tests, and other investigations to develop evidence-based treatment plans.
* Manage patients with common and complex gastroenterology conditions while ensuring timely escalation, multidisciplinary review, and appropriate continuity of care.
* Collaborate with surgeons, radiologists, oncologists, dietitians, internal medicine physicians, nurses, and other specialists to deliver integrated patient care.
* Participate in on-call duties as required by the gastroenterology department and respond to urgent clinical needs within hospital protocols.
* Educate patients on disease prevention, lifestyle modification, nutrition, medication adherence, screening needs, treatment options, and long-term gastrointestinal health.
* Maintain accurate medical records, procedure notes, consent documentation, endoscopy reports, follow-up plans, and clinical summaries in accordance with Saudi healthcare regulations.
* Contribute to departmental quality improvement programs, clinical audits, patient safety initiatives, peer review activities, and service improvement plans.
* Support training and mentorship of junior doctors, residents, nurses, endoscopy staff, and allied health professionals.
* Stay updated with advancements in gastroenterology, endoscopy techniques, hepatobiliary medicine, international guidelines, and new treatment approaches.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MD or equivalent from a recognized institution.
* Board certification in Gastroenterology.
* Minimum 5 years of post-qualification experience in gastroenterology and endoscopy.
* Must hold or be eligible for Saudi Commission for Health Specialties licensing for the actual work location.
* Strong proficiency in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, including upper GI endoscopy, colonoscopy, polypectomy, and ERCP where applicable.
* Experienced in managing gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary disorders across inpatient and outpatient settings.
* Able to interpret imaging, laboratory findings, endoscopic results, and clinical investigations with accuracy and sound judgment.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to explain diagnoses and treatment plans clearly to patients and families.
