Role Context
The Consultant - Gastroenterology will provide expert inpatient and outpatient care for patients with gastrointestinal, liver, pancreatic, biliary, and hepatobiliary conditions. The role requires strong diagnostic judgment, advanced endoscopic capability, accurate interpretation of investigations, and close collaboration with surgeons, radiologists, oncologists, dietitians, nurses, and other specialists. The consultant will help strengthen gastroenterology services in Riyadh by delivering evidence-based treatment, supporting patient safety, mentoring junior clinicians, and maintaining compliance with Saudi healthcare regulations.
Key Responsibilities
* Conduct comprehensive assessments for patients with gastrointestinal, liver, pancreatic, biliary, and hepatobiliary disorders.
* Diagnose and manage a wide range of digestive conditions using clinical examination, patient history, imaging, laboratory results, and endoscopic findings.
* Perform diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, including upper GI endoscopy, colonoscopy, polypectomy, and ERCP where applicable.
* Provide inpatient and outpatient gastroenterology consultations for acute and chronic digestive health concerns.
* Develop evidence-based treatment plans tailored to diagnosis, disease severity, patient condition, lifestyle factors, and long-term care needs.
* Collaborate with surgeons, radiologists, oncologists, dietitians, internal medicine physicians, nurses, and allied healthcare teams to ensure integrated care.
* Participate in on-call duties as required by the department and provide timely specialist input for urgent gastroenterology cases.
* Educate patients on disease prevention, medication use, lifestyle modifications, nutrition guidance, procedure preparation, and treatment options.
* Maintain accurate consultation notes, procedure reports, treatment plans, consent records, discharge summaries, and follow-up documentation.
* Ensure compliance with Saudi healthcare regulations, SCFHS licensing requirements, hospital policies, patient safety standards, and clinical governance procedures.
* Contribute to departmental quality improvement, clinical audits, patient safety initiatives, morbidity reviews, and service development activities.
* Support training and mentorship of junior doctors, residents, and allied health staff through clinical teaching and case-based learning.
* Stay updated with advancements in gastroenterology and incorporate safe, evidence-based techniques into clinical practice.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MD, MBBS, or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
* Board certification in Gastroenterology or an equivalent recognized consultant-level qualification.
* Minimum 5 years of post-qualification experience in gastroenterology and endoscopy.
* Must hold or be eligible for Saudi Commission for Health Specialties licensing.
* Strong proficiency in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures.
* Experience performing upper GI endoscopy, colonoscopy, polypectomy, and ERCP where applicable.
* Solid clinical background in managing gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary disorders in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
* Ability to interpret imaging, laboratory results, endoscopic findings, and clinical data to guide treatment decisions.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in a multicultural, fast-paced clinical environment.
