Role Context
The Consultant Geriatrician will provide comprehensive medical leadership for older adults with acute illness, chronic disease, cognitive impairment, frailty, mobility decline, polypharmacy, and complex care needs. This role is important for improving quality of life, reducing avoidable complications, supporting safer transitions between care settings, and helping elderly patients maintain independence for as long as possible. The consultant will work closely with physicians, nurses, therapists, psychologists, social workers, rehabilitation teams, and palliative care specialists to deliver coordinated, age-friendly healthcare.
Key Responsibilities
* Assess, diagnose, and manage acute and chronic medical conditions affecting elderly patients with complex clinical needs.
* Conduct Comprehensive Geriatric Assessments covering medical, functional, cognitive, psychological, social, mobility, medication, and support-related factors.
* Develop individualized care plans for older adults with multiple comorbidities, frailty, cognitive decline, falls risk, mobility limitations, and long-term health concerns.
* Manage common geriatric syndromes including dementia, delirium, falls, frailty, osteoporosis, polypharmacy, incontinence, mobility disorders, and functional deterioration.
* Provide consultation services for hospitalized elderly patients and support safe transitions between inpatient, outpatient, rehabilitation, long-term care, and community settings.
* Coordinate care with primary care physicians, internal medicine teams, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, social workers, rehabilitation teams, and palliative care specialists.
* Promote preventive healthcare, chronic disease management, healthy aging strategies, medication review, fall prevention, and functional preservation.
* Contribute to the development of geriatric medicine services, age-friendly healthcare pathways, clinical protocols, and elderly care improvement initiatives.
* Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, clinical governance, case reviews, audits, and evidence-based practice programs.
* Provide teaching, supervision, and mentorship to physicians, residents, nurses, caregivers, and allied healthcare professionals.
* Support awareness of geriatric medicine principles among clinical teams, caregivers, and families involved in elderly patient care.
* Participate in research, publications, presentations, service development projects, and academic activities related to aging and elderly care.
* Maintain accurate documentation, care plans, clinical notes, medication reviews, consultation records, and follow-up plans in line with DOH Abu Dhabi requirements and organizational standards.
* Stay updated with advances in geriatric medicine, dementia care, frailty management, rehabilitation pathways, and healthy aging practices.
Ideal Profile
* Medical Degree such as MBBS or equivalent from a recognized institution.
* Completion of accredited specialty training in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, or a related medical specialty.
* Fellowship, subspecialty training, or equivalent advanced qualification in Geriatric Medicine.
* Board certification in Geriatric Medicine recognized by the Department of Health Abu Dhabi.
* Eligibility for DOH Abu Dhabi Consultant licensure is required for the actual work location.
* Minimum 3-5 years of post-board or fellowship experience as a Consultant Geriatrician.
* Strong expertise in Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment and management of complex elderly patients.
* Experienced in dementia care, delirium management, falls prevention, frailty care, osteoporosis, polypharmacy review, incontinence, mobility disorders, and functional decline.
* Background in tertiary hospitals, rehabilitation centers, long-term care facilities, or academic medical institutions is preferred.
* Experience in geriatric service development, quality improvement, clinical pathways, and age-friendly healthcare initiatives is an advantage.
* Research, academic, audit, publication, or teaching involvement related to elderly care is preferred.
* Excellent communication, leadership, patient counseling, and multidisciplinary teamwork skills.
* Fluency in English is required; Arabic language ability is an advantage.
* Able to work effectively in a multicultural healthcare environment with empathy, patience, clinical accuracy, and respect for elderly patients and families.
