Role Context
The Consultant - Glaucoma Ophthalmology will provide comprehensive specialist care for patients with primary, secondary, complex, and refractory glaucoma. The role includes detailed glaucoma evaluation, optic nerve assessment, visual field interpretation, OCT review, intraocular pressure monitoring, laser treatment, surgical intervention, and long-term disease follow-up. The consultant will help strengthen ophthalmology services in Dubai by combining advanced clinical judgment, surgical precision, patient education, and collaborative care with multidisciplinary eye care teams.
Key Responsibilities
* Diagnose and manage all types of glaucoma, optic nerve disorders, ocular hypertension, and related progressive vision-threatening conditions.
* Perform comprehensive glaucoma assessments, including visual field analysis, OCT interpretation, gonioscopy, optic nerve evaluation, and intraocular pressure assessment.
* Provide medical, laser, and surgical treatment plans for patients with early, moderate, advanced, complex, or refractory glaucoma.
* Perform glaucoma procedures such as trabeculectomy, glaucoma drainage device implantation, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, and laser therapies.
* Manage patients requiring long-term glaucoma monitoring, medication adjustment, post-operative follow-up, and complication prevention.
* Evaluate complex glaucoma cases linked to trauma, inflammation, previous eye surgery, corneal disease, retinal disease, or systemic medical conditions.
* Collaborate with ophthalmologists, optometrists, retina specialists, cornea specialists, anesthesiologists, nurses, technicians, and other healthcare professionals.
* Educate patients and families on glaucoma progression, medication compliance, surgical options, laser treatment, follow-up schedules, and vision preservation.
* Maintain accurate medical records, including consultation notes, diagnostic findings, visual field reports, OCT reviews, operative notes, consent forms, and follow-up plans.
* Ensure clinical care follows DHA standards, hospital policies, infection control requirements, surgical safety protocols, and evidence-based ophthalmology practice.
* Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, research activity, case reviews, CME programs, and departmental meetings.
* Support a high-quality patient experience through clear communication, ethical decision-making, confidentiality, and compassionate care.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MBBS, MD, or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
* Board certification or fellowship in Ophthalmology with subspecialty training in Glaucoma.
* Valid DHA Consultant License or Eligibility Letter in Ophthalmology.
* Minimum 5-7 years of post-specialist experience in glaucoma management and surgery.
* Strong expertise in advanced glaucoma diagnostics, laser procedures, trabeculectomy, glaucoma drainage devices, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, and complex case management.
* Experience in tertiary eye care, specialist ophthalmology centers, or academic institutions is preferred.
* Exposure to advanced glaucoma technologies and modern ophthalmic imaging platforms is an advantage.
* Research, teaching, audit, or academic experience is valuable.
* Excellent communication, patient counselling, surgical judgment, and clinical documentation skills.
* Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary and multicultural healthcare environment.
