Role Context
The Consultant
Core Duties
* Diagnose and manage all types of glaucoma, ocular hypertension, optic nerve disease, and related ophthalmic disorders.
* Perform comprehensive glaucoma evaluations including visual field analysis, OCT interpretation, gonioscopy, intraocular pressure assessment, optic nerve examination, and risk-based clinical review.
* Provide medical, laser, and surgical treatment for glaucoma patients based on disease severity, progression risk, medication response, and patient needs.
* Perform glaucoma procedures including trabeculectomy, glaucoma drainage device implantation, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, and laser therapies.
* Manage complex and refractory glaucoma cases requiring advanced diagnostic review, surgical planning, multidisciplinary input, and long-term follow-up.
* Develop individualized treatment plans that balance vision preservation, medication tolerance, surgical options, patient lifestyle, and ongoing monitoring requirements.
* Educate patients and families on glaucoma progression, medication compliance, eye drop technique, treatment expectations, follow-up schedules, and warning symptoms.
* Collaborate with ophthalmology subspecialists, optometrists, nurses, imaging teams, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to support integrated eye care.
* Maintain accurate medical records, including consultation notes, diagnostic results, procedure documentation, surgical reports, consent forms, and follow-up plans.
* Ensure compliance with UAE healthcare regulations, hospital protocols, patient safety standards, infection control requirements, and clinical governance policies.
* Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, research activities, CME programs, and departmental case discussions.
* Support teaching and mentoring for junior doctors, residents, nurses, technicians, and ophthalmology team members.
* Stay updated with advances in glaucoma diagnostics, optic nerve imaging, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, laser technology, and evidence-based ophthalmology practice.
Ideal Profile
* MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
* Board certification, fellowship, or equivalent recognized qualification in Ophthalmology.
* Subspecialty training in Glaucoma.
* Valid UAE Consultant license or eligibility for consultant-level ophthalmology practice.
* Minimum 5-7 years of post-specialist experience in glaucoma management and surgery.
* Strong expertise in advanced glaucoma diagnostics, visual field interpretation, OCT interpretation, gonioscopy, intraocular pressure assessment, and optic nerve evaluation.
* Proven experience performing trabeculectomy, glaucoma drainage device implantation, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, and laser glaucoma procedures.
* Ability to manage complex, refractory, and progressive glaucoma cases with careful clinical decision-making.
* Experience in tertiary eye care or academic institutions will be an advantage.
* Exposure to advanced glaucoma technologies and minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries is preferred.
* Research and teaching experience will be valued.
* Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain chronic eye disease, treatment plans, and surgical options clearly to patients and families.
