Role Context
The Consultant Hematology Oncologist will provide comprehensive diagnosis, treatment planning, and long-term management for patients with blood disorders, hematological cancers, and solid tumors. The role is central to improving cancer care pathways through accurate diagnostic interpretation, individualized therapy selection, complication management, survivorship planning, and collaboration with tumor boards and multidisciplinary teams. The consultant will also support service growth, quality improvement, academic activity, and research-driven oncology practice within a modern healthcare environment.
Key Responsibilities
* Diagnose, evaluate, and manage hematological disorders including anemia, coagulation disorders, leukemias, lymphomas, multiple myeloma, and other benign or malignant blood diseases.
* Assess and treat patients with solid tumors using evidence-based oncology protocols, international treatment guidelines, and patient-specific risk factors.
* Develop individualized treatment plans that may include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, hormonal therapy where applicable, supportive care, transfusion support, and symptom control.
* Interpret diagnostic investigations including bone marrow biopsy reports, peripheral blood findings, pathology reports, molecular testing, cytogenetics, tumor markers, and imaging studies.
* Participate in multidisciplinary tumor boards and coordinate care with surgeons, radiation oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, palliative care teams, nurses, pharmacists, and allied healthcare professionals.
* Monitor treatment response, disease progression, treatment toxicity, complications, adverse events, and supportive care needs throughout the patient journey.
* Manage oncology-related complications such as neutropenia, anemia, thrombocytopenia, infection risk, coagulation concerns, pain, fatigue, nutritional issues, and therapy-related side effects.
* Provide survivorship care, follow-up planning, relapse monitoring, patient counseling, and palliative care coordination where appropriate.
* Contribute to the development and enhancement of Hematology Oncology services, cancer care pathways, referral systems, and multidisciplinary treatment protocols.
* Participate in departmental quality improvement, patient safety work, clinical governance, accreditation readiness, and regulatory compliance activities.
* Provide teaching, supervision, and mentorship to junior physicians, residents, nurses, pharmacists, and allied healthcare professionals involved in hematology oncology care.
* Support CME activities, departmental education programs, clinical audits, research initiatives, publications, presentations, and clinical trials where applicable.
* Stay updated with emerging therapies, precision medicine, molecular oncology, advanced therapeutics, and international hematology oncology guidelines.
* Maintain accurate consultation notes, diagnostic interpretations, treatment plans, consent documentation, chemotherapy records, progress notes, survivorship plans, and follow-up reports in line with DOH regulations and hospital policies.
Ideal Profile
* Medical Degree such as MBBS or equivalent from a recognized institution.
* Completion of accredited specialty training in Internal Medicine.
* Fellowship, subspecialty training, or board qualification in Hematology Oncology, Hematology, or Medical Oncology.
* Board Certification in Hematology, Medical Oncology, or Hematology-Oncology recognized by the Department of Health Abu Dhabi.
* Eligibility for DOH Abu Dhabi Consultant licensure.
* Minimum 3-5 years of post-board or post-fellowship experience as a Consultant Hematology Oncologist.
* Strong expertise in managing hematological malignancies, benign blood disorders, coagulation conditions, solid tumors, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and supportive oncology care.
* Previous experience in tertiary care hospitals, comprehensive cancer centers, or academic medical institutions is preferred.
* Experience with stem cell transplantation programs will be desirable.
* Participation in clinical trials, oncology research, publications, presentations, or academic activities will be an advantage.
* Knowledge of precision medicine, molecular oncology, advanced therapeutics, tumor board workflows, and multidisciplinary cancer pathways is highly valued.
* Excellent communication, leadership, clinical judgment, patient counseling, and multidisciplinary collaboration skills.
* Fluency in English is required, while Arabic language proficiency will be an advantage.
* Strong commitment to patient-centered care, ethical medical practice, clinical governance, documentation accuracy, and continuous professional development.
