Role Context
The Consultant Infectious Diseases physician will provide specialist clinical leadership for patients with serious, recurrent, resistant, or diagnostically challenging infections. The role combines inpatient and outpatient management with infection prevention, antimicrobial stewardship, surveillance, outbreak response, and hospital-wide clinical governance. By working closely with intensivists, internists, microbiologists, pharmacists, nurses, and public health professionals, the consultant will help reduce infection-related complications, improve antimicrobial use, strengthen patient safety, and support effective management of emerging infectious threats.
Key Responsibilities
* Diagnose and manage a broad range of bacterial, viral, fungal, parasitic, and other infectious diseases.
* Provide consultant-level care for complex inpatient and outpatient infectious disease cases.
* Lead management of severe sepsis and complicated infections requiring multidisciplinary treatment.
* Diagnose and treat HIV and associated opportunistic infections using evidence-based treatment pathways.
* Manage tuberculosis, including complex, drug-resistant, and clinically challenging presentations.
* Provide specialist care for viral hepatitis and related infectious complications.
* Assess immunocompromised patients with suspected or confirmed infections and coordinate individualized treatment strategies.
* Provide expert consultation on healthcare-associated and hospital-acquired infections.
* Review microbiology results, culture findings, antimicrobial susceptibility data, serology, molecular diagnostics, and imaging to guide treatment.
* Develop and oversee antimicrobial stewardship initiatives focused on appropriate antibiotic selection, dosing, duration, and de-escalation.
* Work closely with clinical pharmacists and microbiology teams to monitor antimicrobial resistance patterns and prescribing practices.
* Develop, review, and implement infection prevention and control policies across clinical departments.
* Advise on isolation requirements, transmission-based precautions, and appropriate infection containment measures.
* Participate in outbreak investigation, epidemiological surveillance, case tracing, and hospital response planning.
* Monitor compliance with infection prevention standards and recommend corrective actions where risks are identified.
* Collaborate with intensive care, internal medicine, emergency medicine, microbiology, pharmacy, nursing, and public health teams.
