Role Context
The Consultant Infectious Diseases will provide advanced clinical care for patients with complicated, communicable, hospital-associated, and high-risk infections. The role is important for improving patient safety, reducing infection-related complications, optimizing antimicrobial use, supporting outbreak readiness, and strengthening infection prevention practices within a modern hospital environment. Working with intensive care, internal medicine, microbiology, public health, nursing, pharmacy, and hospital leadership teams, the consultant will help deliver evidence-based infectious disease care while supporting governance, education, surveillance, and quality improvement.
Key Responsibilities
* Diagnose and manage a wide range of infectious diseases across inpatient and outpatient clinical settings.
* Lead clinical management of complex infectious disease cases including sepsis, HIV, tuberculosis, viral hepatitis, resistant infections, and complicated systemic infections.
* Provide expert consultation on hospital-acquired infections, healthcare-associated infections, communicable diseases, emerging infectious diseases, and infections in immunocompromised patients.
* Develop, implement, and monitor antimicrobial stewardship programs to improve antibiotic selection, dosing, duration, resistance prevention, and prescribing quality.
* Support infection control policy development, isolation protocols, surveillance systems, and hospital-wide infection prevention standards.
* Collaborate with intensive care, internal medicine, microbiology, public health, pharmacy, emergency medicine, surgery, nursing, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
* Participate in outbreak investigation, exposure review, contact tracing support, surveillance activities, and infection prevention initiatives.
* Oversee infection control compliance within the hospital, including isolation practices, hand hygiene standards, transmission-based precautions, and staff education.
* Review microbiology reports, blood cultures, antimicrobial sensitivity results, laboratory findings, imaging reports, and clinical progress to guide treatment decisions.
* Educate and train medical staff on infection prevention, antimicrobial stewardship, communicable disease precautions, and evidence-based infectious disease management.
* Stay updated with emerging infectious disease trends, clinical guidelines, public health alerts, and relevant research.
* Contribute to clinical audits, quality improvement projects, morbidity reviews, governance meetings, and hospital policy discussions.
* Maintain accurate consultation notes, antimicrobial recommendations, infection control records, outbreak documentation, treatment plans, and follow-up reports in line with UAE healthcare requirements.
* Promote patient safety, ethical practice, confidentiality, clinical governance, and multidisciplinary communication in all infectious disease services.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MBBS or equivalent from a recognized institution.
* Board Certification in Infectious Diseases is mandatory.
* MOHAP eligibility or UAE medical licensing eligibility for Sharjah is required.
* Minimum 5 years of experience as a Consultant Infectious Disease specialist.
* Strong expertise in managing complex infectious diseases, communicable diseases, healthcare-associated infections, and high-risk inpatient cases.
* Practical experience in infection control programs and antimicrobial stewardship initiatives.
* Proven ability to manage sepsis, HIV, tuberculosis, viral hepatitis, emerging infections, immunocompromised patient infections, and hospital-acquired infections.
* Experience working with ICU, microbiology, internal medicine, pharmacy, and public health teams is highly valued.
* Strong clinical judgment, leadership ability, communication skills, and multidisciplinary teamwork.
* Experience in a multicultural healthcare environment is preferred.
* Ability to train medical staff and support hospital-wide infection prevention practices.
