Role Context
The Consultant - Infectious Diseases will provide specialist clinical leadership for adult patients with complicated infections, high-risk presentations, antimicrobial resistance concerns, and hospital-acquired infections. The role has strong impact on patient safety, infection control, antibiotic optimization, ICU outcomes, and hospital quality standards. By combining expert diagnosis, careful treatment planning, multidisciplinary consultation, and stewardship leadership, the consultant will help improve infection management and support safer healthcare delivery in Dubai’s advanced clinical environment.
Key Responsibilities
* Diagnose, treat, and manage a broad range of infectious diseases including bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic infections.
* Manage complex infectious disease cases such as sepsis, HIV, tuberculosis, endocarditis, osteomyelitis, hospital-acquired infections, resistant organisms, and recurrent infections.
* Provide inpatient and outpatient consultation services for adult infectious disease referrals, complex diagnostic cases, and treatment-resistant infections.
* Lead and support antimicrobial stewardship programs to optimize antibiotic use, reduce inappropriate prescribing, and promote evidence-based treatment protocols.
* Collaborate with ICU, internal medicine, surgery, microbiology, emergency medicine, pharmacy, nursing, and infection prevention teams for integrated patient care.
* Review microbiology results, blood cultures, imaging findings, inflammatory markers, antibiotic history, clinical progression, and risk factors to guide treatment plans.
* Participate in infection prevention and control initiatives, outbreak management, surveillance activities, isolation guidance, and hospital-acquired infection reduction programs.
* Support ICU infectious disease consultation for critically ill patients with sepsis, pneumonia, bloodstream infections, device-related infections, and multi-organ complications.
* Ensure clinical practice aligns with hospital protocols, antimicrobial guidelines, infection control standards, patient safety requirements, and applicable UAE healthcare regulations.
* Maintain accurate medical documentation, consultation notes, antimicrobial plans, culture review summaries, infection control recommendations, and follow-up records.
* Educate patients and families on infectious disease diagnosis, treatment duration, medication adherence, prevention measures, and follow-up requirements.
* Contribute to teaching, staff training, audits, research activity, case reviews, continuing medical education, and quality improvement programs.
* Participate in multidisciplinary meetings, infection control committees, antimicrobial stewardship reviews, and complex case discussions.
* Stay updated with advances in infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, emerging infections, infection prevention, HIV care, tuberculosis treatment, and international clinical guidelines.
Ideal Profile
* MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized medical institution.
* Board certification, fellowship, or equivalent specialist qualification in Infectious Diseases.
* Recognized qualification such as American Board, UK CCT, Canadian Board, or equivalent is preferred.
* Valid consultant license or eligibility letter in Infectious Diseases from the relevant healthcare authority is preferred.
* Minimum 5-7 years of post-specialist experience in a tertiary care or academic hospital.
* Strong experience managing complex infectious disease cases, antimicrobial stewardship, infection prevention, and hospital infection control programs.
* Proven ability to manage sepsis, HIV, tuberculosis, endocarditis, osteomyelitis, hospital-acquired infections, ICU infections, and resistant organisms.
* Experience in outbreak management and infection control program development is highly desirable.
* Exposure to ICU infectious disease consultation is an advantage.
* Research publications, academic teaching, audit activity, or clinical guideline development in infectious diseases will be valued.
* Excellent clinical judgment, communication, teamwork, leadership, and multidisciplinary collaboration skills.
* Ability to work effectively in a multicultural, high-acuity clinical environment.
