Role Context
The Consultant - Infectious Diseases will provide expert clinical leadership for patients with complex communicable diseases, healthcare-associated infections, resistant organisms, sepsis, HIV, tuberculosis, viral hepatitis, and infections in immunocompromised patients. The role has strong hospital-wide impact because infectious disease practice directly supports safe prescribing, outbreak prevention, ICU outcomes, infection control compliance, and clinical governance. Within Dubai’s advanced healthcare market, the consultant will help strengthen infection prevention systems, antimicrobial stewardship, and high-quality multidisciplinary care.
Key Responsibilities
* Diagnose and manage a wide range of infectious diseases in inpatient and outpatient settings, including bacterial, viral, fungal, parasitic, communicable, and healthcare-associated infections.
* Lead the clinical management of complex cases such as sepsis, HIV, tuberculosis, viral hepatitis, hospital-acquired infections, emerging infections, and infections in immunocompromised patients.
* Provide expert consultation for hospital-acquired infections, device-related infections, resistant organisms, post-operative infections, ICU infections, and difficult diagnostic cases.
* Develop, support, and implement antimicrobial stewardship programs to improve antibiotic use, reduce resistance risk, and align treatment with evidence-based guidelines.
* Advise on infection control policies, isolation protocols, surveillance practices, outbreak prevention, and hospital infection prevention standards.
* Collaborate with intensive care, internal medicine, microbiology, emergency medicine, surgery, pharmacy, nursing, public health, and infection prevention teams.
* Participate in outbreak investigation, contact tracing support, infection surveillance, risk review, and implementation of containment measures.
* Review microbiology results, culture reports, antimicrobial sensitivities, inflammatory markers, imaging findings, and clinical progression to guide treatment decisions.
* Oversee infection control compliance within clinical areas and provide specialist input on patient isolation, staff safety, environmental precautions, and transmission prevention.
* Educate and train physicians, nurses, allied healthcare staff, and clinical teams on infection prevention, antimicrobial use, emerging infection risks, and hospital safety practices.
* Stay updated with emerging infectious disease trends, international guidelines, antimicrobial resistance patterns, public health alerts, and infectious disease research.
* Contribute to clinical audits, antimicrobial reviews, quality improvement projects, morbidity discussions, hospital governance activities, and patient safety initiatives.
* Maintain accurate consultation notes, antimicrobial recommendations, infection control advice, treatment plans, discharge guidance, and follow-up documentation.
* Ensure clinical practice follows hospital policies, UAE healthcare licensing requirements, infection prevention standards, ethical practice, and patient confidentiality rules.
Ideal Profile
* Medical degree such as MBBS or equivalent from a recognized medical institution.
* Board certification in Infectious Diseases is mandatory.
* Minimum 5 years of experience as a Consultant Infectious Disease specialist.
* Strong expertise in managing complex infectious diseases, communicable diseases, healthcare-associated infections, resistant organisms, and infections in immunocompromised patients.
* Practical experience in infection control programs, antimicrobial stewardship, outbreak investigation, and hospital infection prevention systems.
* Proven ability to manage sepsis, HIV, tuberculosis, viral hepatitis, hospital-acquired infections, ICU infections, and emerging infectious disease cases.
* Eligibility for UAE medical licensing is preferred.
* Experience working in multicultural healthcare environments and high-acuity hospital settings is highly desirable.
* Excellent clinical judgment, decision-making, leadership, communication, and multidisciplinary teamwork skills.
* Ability to educate clinical staff and support hospital-wide infection prevention standards.
